Uncompromising Pursuit of Mechanical Watchmaking
True to Germany's mechanical prowess, A. Lange & Söhne has established itself as an unmissable presence among watch enthusiasts since its revival in 1994, through its unique approach to high-end watchmaking that relentlessly pursues both the function and beauty of its mechanisms. In 2014, the brand continues its uncompromising pursuit of mechanical watchmaking, indifferent to trends.
Among the new releases, watch aficionados will immediately be drawn to the "Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase", a model featuring a moon phase complication within the "Lange 1" collection, the brand's signature line. This timepiece showcases an off-center dial with the brand's hallmark oversized date display positioned at the upper right.
However, the true highlight is undoubtedly the "Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar "Terraluna"". While appearing outwardly simple, it houses a perpetual calendar mechanism and a new astronomical complication. Beyond its perpetual calendar, this model boasts a newly developed "orbit moon phase display" on the case back.
This mechanism, composed of three exquisite discs, features a balance wheel at the periphery representing the sun. The moon orbits the Earth—which rotates once every 24 hours at the center of the disc—counter-clockwise, completing its phases with remarkable accuracy, closely mirroring the true lunar cycle of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds. Thus, unlike conventional moon phase indicators that only show the age of the moon, this mechanism displays the positional relationship between the sun, moon, and Earth.
Further enhancing its appeal are the classic, highly legible dial design, inspired by a masterpiece regulator pocket watch from 1807 housed in the Mathematical and Physical Salon of the Zwinger Palace—a testament to the splendor and scientific advancement of the Saxon dynasty in Dresden—and its impressive 14-day power reserve.
