AltiC, a Hard Material, Makes Its Case Debut

At Baselworld 2018, CITIZEN unveiled new additions to the Eco-Drive One, distinguished by its world's thinnest case at 2.98mm (design measurement). The Eco-Drive One is the world's slimmest light-powered Eco-Drive model, housing a movement just 1.00mm thick. First announced at Baselworld 2016, this flagship CITIZEN model has garnered global media acclaim for its groundbreaking thinness and design.

The first of these is a world limited edition model featuring AltiC, an exceptionally hard material, on the bezel. AltiC is a composite material of alumina (aluminum oxide) and titanium carbide, boasting a Vickers hardness of approximately 1900. Traditionally used in metal cutting tools due to its hardness, its scratch resistance and ability to achieve a deep, beautiful luster through polishing made it an ideal choice for the exterior of the Eco-Drive One. This marks the first time AltiC, notoriously difficult to process, has been used in a wristwatch.

The contrast with the cermet*1 used for the case is striking, creating an unprecedented aesthetic. Production is limited to 1000 units worldwide.



Simultaneously, three models are introduced, each incorporating CITIZEN's proprietary Super Titanium™*2 material for the case and bracelet for the first time. The case thickness is a mere 3.53mm (design measurement). Achieving this level of thinness with titanium, a material challenging to process, is a testament to CITIZEN's pioneering expertise in titanium development.

The case surface is treated with CITIZEN's unique Duratect α*3 surface hardening technology, achieving the highest level of hardness within the Eco-Drive One lineup.

The dial utilizes sapphire crystal, offering a captivating new hue and texture. With a diameter of 36.5mm (design measurement), the size is perfectly suited for both men and women.

Both collections are scheduled for release this autumn.

*1 Cermet: A coined term combining "Ceramics" and "Metal." It refers to composite materials made by mixing powders of hard compounds such as metal carbides and nitrides with a metallic binder and sintering them. They possess the heat resistance and wear resistance characteristic of ceramics, along with the toughness of metals. Unlike conventional ceramics, they can achieve metallic luster and color expression.

*2 Super Titanium™: Through CITIZEN's proprietary technology, pure titanium is treated with Duratect surface hardening, achieving a hardness more than five times that of stainless steel. It is scratch-resistant, lightweight, gentle on the skin, and offers a comfortable wearing experience.

*3 Duratect α: Duratect is CITIZEN's proprietary technology that enhances the surface hardness of metals such as stainless steel and titanium. This superior wear resistance protects the watch case from scratches and scuffs, preserving its luster for extended periods. Duratect α coats the case and bracelet with an alloy film approximately twice as hard as conventional Duratect, with a Vickers hardness of 2000 or higher. It is highly resistant to scratches and maintains a brilliance comparable to precious metals.
