Exhibition Focuses on Works Since the 1970s

The National Art Center, Tokyo, in Roppongi, is currently hosting the Cartier exhibition "Cartier, Crystallization of Time." This exhibition presents a unique concept, the first of its kind globally, differing from previous archival exhibitions held at art museums worldwide.

Cartier, a prestigious jewelry brand, was founded in Paris, France, in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier. When the company was passed down to his three grandsons—Louis, Pierre, and Jacques—in the early 20th century, it underwent significant development, laying the foundation for modern jewelry.

The exhibition, themed "Crystallization of Time," marks the first-ever attempt to focus on contemporary works created over approximately 40 years, from the 1970s onwards. Structured around the concept of "time," it is divided into three chapters: "Color and Material," "Form and Design," and "Universal Curiosity." By exploring the potential hidden within materials while freely traversing time, the exhibition showcases Cartier's imaginative world, which consistently breathes new life into the jewelry world while honoring tradition, evident in its colors, lines, and forms.

The exhibition's spatial design is by New Material Research Laboratory, led by Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida. Guided by the philosophy that "old materials are the newest," these artists, who fuse traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, present a new viewing experience within a flowing exhibition space designed with a keen awareness of "time."

Furthermore, over half of the exhibited works are privately owned pieces, carefully selected from around the world, which are not typically made public. This is a rare opportunity to closely admire pieces rarely seen by the public, so don't miss it.
