Measure Speed, Distance, and Heart Rate: The "Speedmaster Chronoscope," Filled with "Chronograph Love"
The new "Speedmaster Chronoscope," inspired by OMEGA's history of chronograph wristwatches dating back to the 1940s, has been announced. Available in a total of seven models – six in polished and brushed stainless steel, and one in OMEGA's exclusive Bronze Gold – they will be offered at OMEGA boutiques and authorized retailers nationwide.
The Intricate Charm of the Snail Dial Makes a Powerful Impact Even Today
OMEGA has released seven new models for 2021, the "Speedmaster Chronoscope." This collection draws inspiration from OMEGA's heritage of chronograph wristwatches, which began in the 1940s. The word "Chronoscope" is derived from the Greek words "Chronos" (time) and "Scope" (to observe), signifying a device for accurately measuring the duration of an event. The "Speedmaster Chronoscope" masterfully realizes this function with remarkable versatility. Its intricate dial, housed within a 43mm case, features three printed scales: a tachymeter, a telemeter, and a pulsometer.
The tachymeter, used to measure speed based on distance traveled, can accurately calculate average travel times between two points, regardless of whether the distance is measured in miles or kilometers. The telemeter allows for precise measurement of the distance between the observer and an event based on the speed of sound, requiring only two simple steps. This function can be used, for example, to determine the distance from a visible and audible phenomenon like lightning. The pulsometer calculates heart rate per minute by measuring 30 heartbeats, allowing you to measure not only your own pulse but also that of others.
The design of this timepiece incorporates the "snail" design found on OMEGA chronographs from the 1940s, along with leaf-shaped hands and an elegant "spiral" track pattern beneath the Arabic numerals on the dial. These elements pay homage to OMEGA's watchmaking legacy.
In terms of functionality, it is equipped with the new manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 9908. To achieve a power reserve of approximately 60 hours, it features twin barrels with wear-resistant DLC coating. Furthermore, OMEGA's column-wheel mechanism ensures the precise operation of the Chronoscope's multiple functions.
A particularly striking feature is the design and exquisite finishing of the back bridge, visible through the sapphire crystal case back. The Geneva waves decoration, in an arabesque pattern, originates not from the center of the movement but from the balance wheel, a first for OMEGA. This movement and watch have passed the industry's most stringent tests set by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), earning Master Chronometer certification and proving their value even in the harshest environments.
The collection comprises seven variations: six models in polished and brushed stainless steel, and one in OMEGA's exclusive Bronze Gold. The stainless steel models are available with either a silver dial and blue hands, a blue dial and rhodium-plated hands, or a "panda" dial featuring a silver main dial with black sub-dials. Each of these is offered with either a stainless steel bracelet or a leather strap. The bracelet, with a 21mm lug width tapering to 16mm at the buckle, features a patented comfort release system allowing for two-step adjustment up to 2.3mm. The bezel ring is complemented by blue or black anodized aluminum.
The Bronze Gold model features a bronze dial treated for a unique patina, with opaline silver sub-dials and leaf-shaped hands and Arabic numerals coated in Bronze Gold PVD. The tachymeter scale on the polished brown ceramic bezel ring is finished with OMEGA's first "vintage" enamel treatment. The vintage-style leather strap, accented with stitching near the lugs, is fitted with a polished and sand-blasted Bronze Gold buckle. This model is scheduled for release in November 2021.
