1. A Concept Model Showcasing Breitling's Innovation

The first model developed by "Chronoworks®," established within Breitling, makes its debut. Chronoworks® adopts the concept of a tuning department in the motorsports industry, essentially a special team dedicated to enhancing the performance of watches and chronographs. This team is responsible for the "Superocean Heritage Chronoworks®," which features a new mechanism. This limited edition model, soon to be released, incorporates five technological innovations.

2. Featuring Innovative Materials for Unmatched Strength and Lightness

The "Avenger Hurricane" has been released, utilizing the new material "B Breitlight®," which Breitling has exclusive rights to use for its exterior. While approximately one-third the weight of titanium and one-sixth the weight of stainless steel, Breitlight® boasts a toughness far exceeding both materials. Leveraging these material characteristics, the watch is presented in a case diameter of 50mm, one of the largest in Breitling's history. We encourage you to experience this "material of the future," a first in the watch industry, at a retailer.

3. Merging the Advantages of Two Technologies

Connected watches refer to models that can link with smartphones. The "Exospace B55 Night Mission" is Breitling's first connected watch. Developed to offer ultimate performance for pilots, this model uniquely combines the strengths of a chronograph and a smartphone. It is truly a "best of both worlds" model, balancing multifunctionality with ease of use.

The "Superocean Heritage Chronoworks®," the first model from Breitling's new division "Chronoworks®," will finally be released this winter. What innovations has Chronoworks® brought to the company's in-house developed movement?

New Model with Highly Refined In-House Caliber

First, let's explain "Chronoworks®," which is part of the model name.

In the automotive industry, there is engine tuning, a specialized technique aimed at enhancing engine performance. Breitling has applied this concept to watchmaking, forming a special team in 2014 dedicated to improving movement performance. This is Breitling Chronoworks®.

The first "tuned" subject chosen by the team was Caliber 01, a mechanical chronograph movement born from complete in-house development and manufacturing in 2009. This flagship movement promised the integration of precision, performance, durability, and reliability at a high level, offering optimal functionality and safety through its innovative structure. Re-examining it signifies Breitling's pursuit of the next level. This is because such improvements are not limited to high-end models but are promised to become standard in the near future. It is likely that Chronoworks® exists precisely for this purpose.

The primary focus of this review was to enhance energy efficiency. To achieve this, Caliber 01 was re-examined, identifying areas of unnecessary friction and stress to achieve five technological innovations that reduce energy waste. These are as follows:

1. High-tech ceramic (hexagonal boron nitride) is used for parts of the mainplate and bridges.

2. The second, third, and fourth wheels are made of silicon with half the specific gravity of conventional ones. A new shape with high rigidity and no distortion was devised and manufactured using deep reactive ion etching, employed in semiconductor manufacturing.

3. While inheriting the structure of the Swiss lever escapement, silicon is used for the escape wheel and pallet fork.

4. A special gear made of nickel-phosphorus with micro-slits has been developed.

5. A variable inertia balance wheel has been newly developed.

These improvements have been made without altering the fundamental mechanism. By revising the materials and parts, the power reserve has been dramatically extended from 70 hours to 100 hours. This movement, which can be said to anticipate the future of watches, achieves astonishing high performance and is named "Caliber 01 Chronoworks®," fitted into the "Superocean Heritage Chronoworks®."

This model is Breitling's first concept model, with a limited release of 100 pieces worldwide planned. It is essential to keep an eye on Breitling's future developments to see how this technology will become more widespread and what kind of model Chronoworks® will present next.

The "Avenger Hurricane" arrives with a 50mm case diameter, the largest in Breitling's history. Its defining feature is the use of "Breitlight®" for the case. Breitlight® is a new material that, while weighing approximately one-third of titanium and one-sixth of stainless steel, also offers exceptional robustness.

Introducing a New Material Exclusive to Breitling

Since its founding, Breitling has continuously pursued the development of new technologies, and in 2016, it also unveiled a new material for its exteriors: "Breitlight®." This material is a composite, reinforced with fibers added to a polymer. Breitling jointly developed it with a supplier in the Jura region of Switzerland.

It boasts a lightness approximately one-third that of titanium and one-sixth that of stainless steel, while also offering robustness despite its light weight. Its scratch resistance is unparalleled, and it possesses characteristics such as tensile strength, corrosion resistance, magnetic resistance, temperature resistance, and hypoallergenic properties. In essence, it is an exclusive material that offers numerous advantages for a watch case. Complex shapes for components like the bezel, crown, and pushers are reportedly manufactured using a proprietary molding process.

Furthermore, its low thermal conductivity means it does not feel cold to the touch when worn.

Its texture is also noteworthy; it possesses a unique finish that is neither matte nor brilliant, exclusive to Breitlight®. It feels akin to marble.

Incidentally, the material's name, "Breitlight®," incorporates "Breit" from Breitling's company name, indicating that Breitling is the sole user of this material in the watch industry. The "Avenger Hurricane" features a striking 50mm case diameter partly to showcase this lightness; remarkably, the watch itself weighs only 69g. Indeed, when holding the watch, one barely feels its presence. The advent of "Breitlight®" heralds a new era for watch exteriors.

This model is equipped with Breitling's in-house developed and manufactured Caliber B12, featuring a 24-hour function. The all-black dial displays highly legible stencil-style numerals commonly used in aviation. The strap combines a special synthetic fiber on the surface with yellow rubber on the underside, a design developed specifically for the large case.

The master of pilot watches now connects with smartphones. This is the "Exospace B55 Night Mission." Developed based on the concept of utilizing smartphones to enhance the functionality and usability of timepieces, it is the ultimate instrument for aviation professionals.

Leveraging Smartphones to Enhance Pilot Chronograph Performance

For Breitling, technological development has always aimed at "improving the performance of professional instruments." This philosophy remains unchanged with the "Exospace B55 Night Mission," and this was the goal Breitling pursued during its development.

While many connected watches have emerged, some manufacturers have positioned their watches as peripheral devices subordinate to smartphones. However, for Breitling, the smartphone serves solely to maintain the superiority of the chronograph and enhance its functions. Thus, the "Exospace B55 Night Mission" was born.

The development involved a Swiss partner company, not a major IT firm. Furthermore, the fact that it was a collaborative development, rather than an outsourced one, reflects Breitling's characteristic emphasis on independence.

The most significant feature of this model is its ability to measure and share data such as landing time, takeoff time, flight duration, lap times, and split times with a smartphone. The accumulation of this data is crucial for pilots and aviation personnel. The "Exospace B55 Night Mission" allows for instant transmission and storage of daily data to a smartphone. Its compatibility with other applications significantly broadens the scope of data utilization.

Convenient for daily use are the tilt mechanism and the swap function. The tilt mechanism automatically illuminates the backlight when tilted more than 35 degrees upwards from the 12 o'clock position. The swap function allows for switching between local time and a second time zone, both of which have been well-received.

It is equipped with the chronometer-certified caliber "Breitling B55," developed with advanced electronics. The rechargeable battery offers approximately one month of use under normal conditions, and up to 5 months when connection is off. The battery is long-lasting, supporting over 300 recharges, making it usable for over 10 years, which is another attractive feature.
