Tofuku-ji Temple to Host "AFK Resonance Exhibition," Where Contemporary Art Finds Its Voice

It has been announced that "AFK Resonance Exhibition," featuring the director and advisory board of "ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2026" alongside artists connected to AFK, will be held at the Rinzai Zen sect's head temple, Tofuku-ji Temple. The exhibition will run from Saturday, February 21 to Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The exhibition title, "Resonance," signifies a harmonious echo. It embodies the aspiration for the advisory board, artists affiliated with AFK, and their diverse creative energies to resonate with the historic space of Tofuku-ji Temple, thereby fostering new avenues of expression.

Tofuku-ji Temple Expands Exhibition Area for Show by Directors, Advisory Board, and AFK-Affiliated Artists

Following the previous year, the exhibition area will expand beyond the Hojo (abbot's residence) to include symbolic outdoor spaces of Tofuku-ji Temple, such as the gardens around Tsutenkyo Bridge, renowned for autumn foliage; the main hall, where the Soryuzu (blue dragon) mural by Japanese painter Doho Insho adorns the ceiling; and the area surrounding the Daiden Hall, known for its serene atmosphere.

A total of 21 artists will participate, showcasing representative works and new creations. This includes 16 artists such as Director Shinobu Tsubaki and advisory board members Shinji Ohmaki and Izumi Kato, along with the newly joining Ryudai Takano, and five artists who have previously exhibited at ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO.

The exhibition will offer a chance to experience the new appeal of contemporary art, resonating with Tofuku-ji's unique scenery: the wind rustling through the temple grounds, the plants in the garden reflecting the passage of time, and the play of light filtering through the trees.

The Hojo is also known for the "Hasso no Niwa" (Garden of Eight Views) meticulously designed by Mirei Shigemori, a master of modern Japanese gardens. This dry landscape garden, celebrated as a masterpiece of modern Zen gardens, is widely introduced internationally.
