JR West Group's new concept hotel, 'Potel,' opens in Kyoto, offering a unique blend of public bath, cafe, and alleyway experiences.
On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, 'Umekoji Potel KYOTO' will open in Umekoji, Kyoto.
Not 'Hotel,' but 'Potel.'
'Umekoji Potel KYOTO,' the first 'Potel' establishment, is comprised of a main hotel building, five stories above ground, and a separate two-story building, adjacent to Umekoji Park. Its guest rooms are designed to take advantage of the park's scenery. Featuring a public bath, a cafe, an alleyway, and even a koji-making facility, it offers a completely new kind of stay that goes beyond just sleeping and eating.
The project is spearheaded by JR West Holonic, part of the JR West Group.
The hotel itself is designed with numerous thoughtful touches to make guests feel it's a place for meaningful encounters and a place where they can forget time. It aims to be an open hotel that can be easily used by everyone, not just lodgers but also local residents.
Nice to meet you, I'm Potel. Not 'Hotel,' but 'Potel.'
Next to the Kyoto Aquarium. 'Potel' has newly opened along Umekoji Park.
A hotel has opened in Kyoto, offering travelers a serene stay and sparking their curiosity, inviting them to discover a new, unseen Kyoto.
'Potel' is a coined word combining 'Port,' derived from the origin of the word for the entry and exit of goods and culture, with 'Hotel.'
While rooted in the local community, it aims to be a gateway for exchange for both domestic and international visitors. The addition of '°' to 'Hotel' signifies the concept of 'go-en' (円/縁), meaning connection and relationships, with various things coming together.
【Potel Features】
● Books, records, games, and coffee. 'Potel' is more than just guest rooms.
On the 2nd to 5th floors of the main hotel building, there are communal spaces with high ceilings and large windows. Here, guests can enjoy a curated selection of books from 'Seikosha,' a popular bookstore beloved in Kyoto, along with records and board games selected by 'TANSAN,' a Kyoto-based board game company.
You can also savor Potel's original blend coffee, provided by Makino-san of 'TRAVELING COFFEE,' a name synonymous with Kyoto coffee.
● An alleyway and the Umekoji Fermentation Lab, where koji is made, are located within the hotel.
Encounters during travel are the essence of the journey. An alleyway has been created within the hotel, allowing both travelers and locals to stroll and enjoy. It not only serves alcohol but also features a 'koji muro' (koji room) for making fermented foods and the very ingredient for sake. Why not seek new encounters at Umekoji Alleyway, perhaps with a quick drink after returning from the public bath, enjoying koji sweets after dinner at the restaurant, or finding a gift for a loved one at the souvenir shop?
● A hotel with a rare public bath in Japan.
Relax and unwind in the hotel's public bath, 'Poteyu.' It's open to non-guests as well. Original items created in collaboration with牛乳石鹸 (Gyu-nyu Sekken) are also available. After your bath, refresh yourself with a delicious fermented beverage.
● A restaurant and cafe where you can savor carefully selected ingredients with all five senses.
The restaurant on the first floor of the main building partners with 'Sakano-tochuu,' which upholds the vision of 'Agriculture that continues for 100 years.' They offer fresh, delicious vegetables. Lunch includes a choice of main dish and a side buffet. Dinner, themed around 'meat and vegetables,' allows guests to enjoy charcoal-grilled dishes that highlight the ingredients' flavors.
The cafe, offering views of the adjacent Umekoji Park, serves carefully selected coffee, tea, and homemade terrines. Takeaway options are also available for enjoyment in the park.
Potel offers a welcoming atmosphere not only for tourists but also for locals to casually visit and enjoy.
With a public bath, a fermentation lab, a cafe, and a restaurant, there are plenty of elements to enjoy even if you're not staying overnight.
There's a new way to enjoy Kyoto.
