Diverse artists gather in the Rinkai Fukutoshin area for "ARTBAY TOKYO Art Festival 2023"
The "ARTBAY TOKYO Art Festival 2023 ~ CIRCULATION ~" will be held in the Rinkai Fukutoshin area. Now in its second year, this large-scale art festival will unfold over 10 days from Friday, September 15th to Sunday, September 24th, in an open space overlooking the sea.
Through a diverse program of installations, workshops, performances, and XR experiences held across multiple indoor and outdoor venues, the festival offers opportunities for new encounters with art.
Diverse Art Unfolds Under the Theme "CIRCULATION - The City, People, and World in Motion"
"CIRCULATION" is an English word meaning "cycle," "tour," or "circulation." The festival invites visitors to explore the Rinkai Fukutoshin area and engage with a variety of art, including works utilizing advanced technology, workshops focused on the circular economy, and installations using locally sourced materials. It is intended to inspire contemplation on the relationship between the city and its people, coexistence with nature, and the passage of time.
Adjacent to "Hana no Hiroba" (Flower Plaza), the "Ishi to Hikari no Hiroba" (Stone and Light Plaza) will host an outdoor art exhibition titled "Artificial Biotope."
Curated by Yoshidayamar and created by the architectural collective GROUP, the exhibition pavilions will serve as stages for emerging contemporary artists to construct temporary biotopes (living spaces) from their unique perspectives and expressive methods.
At the core of these "pavilions" are "containers" that capture the landscape of the Rinkai Fukutoshin area overlooking the sea. By using these containers as platforms for expression, the festival presents an unprecedented initiative that connects the economic activities, represented by logistics, with biological processes through art.
Participating artists include Kenta Ishige, Mariko Fujikura, Miyu Hosoi, and Shiori Watanabe. They will adorn the Stone and Light Plaza with diverse expressions ranging from music to 3DCG video.
Furthermore, the "CIRCULATION BALL" project will allow visitors to experience the latest AR art works while exploring Hana no Hiroba, Ishi to Hikari no Hiroba, Yume no Ohashi bridge, and Yume no Hiroba plaza. By launching the XR app "STYLY" and viewing the Rinkai Fukutoshin landscape through a smartphone, a fantastical scene unfolds where a giant, seemingly impossible ball dynamically races through the city.

This year's key visual was created by graphic designer MACCIU, known for their original and warm creative style, which has been featured in fashion brand campaigns and children's program title logos. The visuals will be displayed according to the characteristics of each area, serving as a guide for participants.
