Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, hosts an exhibition featuring 14 internationally acclaimed artists including Izumi Kato, Chiharu Shiota, Kohei Nawa, and Tatsuo Miyajima. The event is titled "ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2022."
ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2022, an artist-led art fair set in historic Kyoto, will be held at the UNESCO World Heritage site Kiyomizu-dera Temple from Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 13, 2022.
The venue, centered around four areas of Kiyomizu-dera Temple—the West Gate, the Three-Storied Pagoda, the Sutra Hall, and the Joju-in (normally not open to the public)—will feature works by 14 internationally acclaimed artists, including Nobuaki Tsubaki, who serves as the event's director, as well as Izumi Kato, Chiharu Shiota, Kohei Nawa, and Tatsuo Miyajima. Representative works and new pieces will be displayed together.
This style of appreciating contemporary art while exploring the grounds of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a site boasting 1200 years of history, offers a special viewing experience that engages all five senses, allowing visitors to feel the space and the art in a unique way. We encourage you to pay attention to the collaboration of Japan's leading contemporary artists within the precious spaces of these historic structures.
A Message from the Director of ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO 2022
There is a famous haiku: "Nanohana ya tsuki wa higashi ni hi wa nishi ni" (Rapeseed flowers; the moon in the east, the sun in the west). In high school, a charismatic teacher explained the vast space represented by these 17 syllables, and ever since, I've developed a habit of understanding all phenomena through the concept of space. Yosa Buson, who was also a painter, must have fully grasped the essence of the act of "painting" and the power inherent in the minimal form of haiku. The Joju-in at Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera, with its famed "Moon Garden," which I have the honor of exhibiting in this time, possesses an energy, in my view, comparable to the grandeur of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. I imagine it will undoubtedly offer visitors profound opportunities for insight. The advisory members of ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2022, who are exhibiting here, undoubtedly share a dream of co-creating future culture in collaboration with the entire Kyoto Prefecture, grateful for the opportunity to connect with the history and wisdom of this place.
