ART | The first major retrospective of legendary photographer Saul Leiter in Japan is now open.
From April 29, 2017, Bunkamura The Museum will host the first major retrospective in Japan of legendary New York photographer Saul Leiter, titled "Saul Leiter."
Many came to know the name and work of Saul Leiter after the documentary film "In No Hurry: The Life and Times of Saul Leiter" was released in Japan in 2015.
Despite his success as a leading fashion photographer in New York from the 1950s, at the age of 58, he closed his studio, retired from commercial photography, and disappeared from public view.
Then, at 83, he was brought back into the spotlight with a collection of his work published by Steidl in Germany.
With the full cooperation of the Saul Leiter Foundation in New York, this exhibition brings together approximately 200 works, including photographs and paintings from the foundation's collection, as well as other valuable materials.
This highly anticipated retrospective delves into the secrets of Leiter's creativity, hailed as a "pioneer of color photography" for his innate sense of color.
