"ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2023": A celebration of art by globally active and emerging artists, presented within a historic Kyoto building that has walked alongside tradition
"ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2023": A celebration of art by globally active and emerging artists, presented within a historic Kyoto building that has walked alongside tradition. The exhibition, curated by an advisory board, has also been confirmed.
The venue is the famous "Shosei-en (Kikaku-tei)" (an outlying temple ground of Higashi Honganji). This event was made possible through a connection with the Higashi Honganji sect of Shinshu Otani-ha. Shosei-en (Kikaku-tei) is a stroll garden located about 200 meters east of Higashi Honganji, within its outlying temple grounds. It is known as a national place of scenic beauty, with flowers blooming in every season around the pond, and Kyoto Tower visible.
Displayed within this atmospheric garden are works by 13 internationally acclaimed artists, including the event's director, Takashi Utsumi, as well as Kohei Nawa, and Miwa Yanagi, alongside 9 emerging artists.
Typically, the works of contemporary artists are exhibited in the precious spaces of historic buildings such as tea rooms and shoin reception halls, which are usually not open to the public.
We invite you to enjoy a feast of art by leading contemporary and emerging Japanese artists while exploring a venue that has evolved alongside Kyoto's traditions.

■ Shosei-en (Kikaku-tei)
Shosei-en (Kikaku-tei), a scenic garden located about 200 meters east of Higashi Honganji, within its outlying temple grounds.
In 1641 (Kanei 18), the third shogun, Iemitsu Tokugawa, granted this land (approximately 10 acres), and the garden was designed with the aesthetic sensibilities of Jozan Ishikawa. Flowers bloom here in every season, and its diverse landscapes are known as the "Thirteen Views." In 1936 (Showa 11), it was designated a national place of scenic beauty for its character as a Buddhist temple garden rich in literary charm.
