Japanese Traditional Arts, Closer Than Ever

Art Mix Japan (AMJ) was born in the spring of 2013 as a festival of Japanese arts, designed to make traditional arts, often perceived as inaccessible, enjoyable and accessible through a series of events in Niigata, the only ordinance-designated city on the Sea of Japan coast.

The inaugural event featured approximately 25 performances over two days, attracting visitors from across the country to this rare opportunity to experience premier Japanese traditional arts.

In 2016, it held its first overseas performance in Mexico.

Celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2017, the festival expands its scale, utilizing all 18 venues across Niigata.

Kyogen actor Nomura Manzo, Gagaku musician Hideki Togi, and painter Akira Yamaguchi are among the distinguished lineup of artists representing Japanese culture, including Kabuki, Rakugo, Kyogen, Kagura, and traditional Japanese instruments, who will gather in Niigata.

This major event is packed with highlights, featuring explanations for all performances, collaborations with international artists, interactive and experiential programs, and numerous free performances.
