Masayuki Murai's Exhibition Features Around 50 Works, Hailed as 'Blue Sumi-e'

An exhibition of works by Nihonga artist Masayuki Murai will be held from Wednesday, June 21st to Monday, June 26th, at the Hankyu Umeda Gallery on the 9th floor of Hankyu Umeda Main Store.

Murai, who studied under the Living National Treasure Nihonga painter Yoson Ikeda, has consistently challenged himself to explore new forms of Japanese painting.

After confronting nature and experimenting with the expression of colors he felt, he arrived at ultramarine blue.

His works, which express light and shadow with a single color and evoke an infinite sense of expansion, are praised as 'Blue Sumi-e' and are highly regarded in the Nihonga art world.

This exhibition, marking his 70th birthday and 50th year as an artist, showcases the works he has dedicated his life to, all in one place.

The exhibition also offers a glimpse into his creative process through a recreation of his studio, and will feature a special display of original artwork for Hankyu Department Store's New Year's cards, which he has designed for over 20 years.
