BÉLAIR LAB, the Institute of Aroma and Sensibility, presents the online aroma art exhibition "5 Senses" at Kudan House—an artistic event where you can "smell with your eyes."

BÉLAIR LAB, the Institute of Aroma and Sensibility operated by Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., has been holding the online aroma art exhibition "5 Senses" since Tuesday, September 21, 2021.
In an online environment where one cannot directly smell aromas, this is an entirely new artistic endeavor where you imagine (smell) aromas through sight (eyes). The exhibition displays and photographs artworks within the historic building "kudan house" in Kudan, Tokyo, and presents 3D video content, allowing visitors to experience the mechanisms for appreciating aroma and art online at BÉLAIR LAB.

An Aroma Art Exhibition Where You Deliberately "Don't Smell"
As much of our communication has moved online, opportunities to directly connect with people, places, and things have decreased, leading to changes in how our five senses are used. BÉLAIR LAB believes that "aroma" is one element for spending richer time, and this art exhibition offers an exercise in "imagining aromas" through the sensibilities of artists.

Just as smelling the scent of lemon might bring to mind the color yellow, aromas, though invisible, possess color and form.

The exhibition theme "5 Senses" represents "five olfactory senses, five sensibilities." Five participating artists create art inspired by smelling the works of perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, and viewers virtually experience the aromas by "seeing" these artworks.
The online site also features videos and text introducing the artworks and each artist's olfactory experience, along with 3D footage filmed in a special space.

Participating Artists (Including Collaborated Aromas)

1. Collage Artist: KOSUKE KAWAMURA
~inspired by LOVING FIG~ [Depth and Expansion]

The inside and outside of the lustrous frame present different worlds. A secret door connecting the realms of nature and the room's space. A story of a couple, expanded from the "aroma." Spicy, mature... and an image of downlights rather than fluorescent lights, expressing the couple in monochrome. Please imagine the depth and expansive space beyond the picture.

2. Chandelier Artist: KIM SONGHE
~inspired by PURIFYING GINGER~ [Restart]

Fragments of memory lost along with discarded things. Rediscovering them brings back nostalgic recollections. A junkyard is a treasure trove.
Based on the inspiration received from the aroma, materials were selected from a junkyard. The theme is to evoke what can be experienced through scent and olfaction visually, breaking the viewer's preconceptions.

3. Calligrapher: Mami
~inspired by INSPIRING KODO~ [Listening to Aroma]

Sharpening the senses and embracing the aroma. That is "listening to aroma." The calligraphy embodies a solid weightiness within a soft roundness.
An image of softness, like a down-filled futon, combined with the deep gray of damp mortar after rain, resulted in a work with a solid, weighty presence within a soft roundness.

4. Ikebana Artist: RYOTA HAGIWARA
~inspired by DREAMING GARDENIA~ [Imaginary Garden]

Vibrant, lush greenery. The gardenia water drips and circulates from a floating garden. An aroma that attracts both insects and people serves as a guide to paradise.
From the image of petrichor (the scent released when rain falls on dry earth) in Bali's Ubud, which came to mind upon smelling the aroma, an imaginary garden is expressed with keywords such as the beauty and vitality of nature, a sense of floating, circulation, and dampness.

5. Painter: MOE NAKASE
~inspired by SWINGING PEAR~ [Transition]

At the center lies a rich fruit. It emerges as if overflowing, slowly, slowly spreading. As if the "aroma," which shifts and changes, simply exists.
A freshness like a breeze blowing through a forest, following the scent of ripe kiwi and pear. An image of the transition from spring to summer, like morning dew evaporating. The aroma of the rich fruit at the center overflows and slowly drifts, spreading through the air.
