Global Cycling Network (GCN), the World's Largest Cycling Channel, Makes Its Japanese Debut
In June 2019, GCN Japan, the first dedicated channel in Asia, was established by Play Sports Group (PSG), the operator of Global Cycling Network (GCN), one of the world's largest cycling channels, under Discovery, Inc. (Discovery). GCN Japan is the first new channel since Discovery invested in its parent company, Play Sports Group (PSG), earlier this year. Building on the success of GCN, GCN Tech, GCN en Español, and GCN Italia, which are already widely popular among cycling fans in Europe, GCN Japan will deliver original cycling content in Japan.

For the launch of this new channel, Yukihiro Doi, a former professional cyclist and winner of the All Japan Bicycle Racing Championship Road Race, will appear as the lead presenter. Doi is a veteran cyclist who spent over 8 years with the European team Skill-Shimano/Argos-Shimano. Additionally, Kunihiro Suzuki, a professional mechanic and former internationally renowned instructor at Tokyo Cycle Design College, will also serve as a presenter.
Doi has a professional cycling career spanning approximately 15 years and was the 2012 Japan National Champion. In addition to his extensive experience with top professional teams, he is a widely recognized sportsman in both Asia and Europe, possessing a wealth of knowledge from the peloton and a relentless pursuit of the latest cycling products. Suzuki, who will lead in all technical aspects, distinct from Doi's rider experience, will be responsible for technical and bicycle maintenance segments.
Yukihiro Doi, lead presenter for GCN Japan, commented as follows:
“I am truly delighted to be a part of GCN Japan, the first cycling-related video content creator specifically for Japanese viewers. Together with Mr. Suzuki, I hope to build a wonderful relationship with both passionate fans and cycling beginners. I am also excited to share the charm of this beautiful country, Japan, through cycling. We will be introducing global cycling news, the latest products, cutting-edge technology, and providing exclusive and original insights into professional teams and various races several times a week.”
With the 2020 major event in Tokyo on the horizon and Japanese cycling culture undergoing remarkable development, GCN Japan aims to deliver new original content to an even wider audience of cycling fans. From advice and tutorials on bicycle maintenance, summaries of road race action, to the latest product and technology news from Japan and around the world, GCN Japan will present a fresh lineup, never before seen in Japan, in an unprecedented way.
Simon Wear, Founder and CEO of Play Sports Group, stated:
“For us, with over 3.6 million subscribers primarily in English and Spanish speaking regions, entering the Japanese market feels like a natural progression. The Japanese cycling market continues to grow significantly year by year, and we see a nationwide demand for new and exciting product technologies, race news, and general cycling information. Following the success of our existing GCN channels, including GCN en Español and more recently GCN Italia, we are excited to create and deliver exciting new videos in Japanese for the millions of cycling fans in Japan.”
“We believe that the Japanese production team, including Yukihiro Doi and Kunihiro Suzuki, are the best possible members to produce GCN's unique, informative, inspiring, and engaging video content in Japanese, which has been well-received worldwide. We look forward to building lasting relationships with many people who enjoy cycling not only in Japan but across all of Asia.”
Play Sports Group places great importance on meeting the needs of the Japanese market. To this end, the company is currently seeking many talented professionals who speak Japanese to support this promising channel and the company's growth.
