"TANGO CREATION PLATFORM" announces new fashion items created by world-class designers and Tango's workshops.
The "TANGO CREATION PLATFORM" is a creative project where workshops in Kyoto's Tango region, known for its "Tango Chirimen" silk fabric, collaborate with world-class creators and designers. Through residencies and exchanges, they explore new frontiers for this traditional textile.
Even amidst the unique circumstances of 2020, mutual cooperation and enthusiasm among participants made cross-border creation possible, leading to the recent unveiling of their works. The collection features shirts, scarves, and bags, all leveraging the characteristics of "Tango Chirimen" kimono fabric and its sustainable qualities.
This initiative showcases the new potential of "Tango Chirimen" through the fusion of sensibilities from designers based in Japan and abroad.
The "TANGO CREATION PLATFORM" Explores New Possibilities for "Tango Chirimen"
What emerges from the encounter between 300 years of refined Tango Chirimen techniques and Parisian creativity?
About TANGO CREATION PLATFORM
Launched in 2019, the "TANGO CREATION PLATFORM" project seeks to discover new regional potential by opening up the diverse charms of Tango to the world.
Creators and designers active worldwide engage with "Tango Chirimen" through residencies and exchanges, exploring new territories for the fabric. During their stays, they draw inspiration from Tango's traditions, culture, climate, and the realities of the workshops to create their works.
In 2020, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the project adapted by utilizing online tours and video conferences to approximate the experience of a physical residency.
Even under these unusual circumstances, the mutual cooperation and passion of all involved proved that cross-border creation is indeed possible.

About Tango Chirimen
In the Tango region, where silk weaving has been practiced for over 1300 years, a significant innovation occurred 300 years ago: the birth of "Tango Chirimen."
During the Edo period, Saheiji Kinoya of Mineyama, Koemon Teyamoya and Sahei Yamamoto of Kayadani, and Roheiem Yuuya learned techniques from Nishijin in Kyoto and spread them throughout Tango. Chirimen is a fabric woven using highly twisted weft yarns, resulting in a fine, crinkled texture known as 'shibo.' It is characterized by its supple feel and rich color saturation.
It continues to support Japan's kimono culture as a luxurious fabric essential for formal wear. Within this historical and cultural context, numerous new textiles are now being cultivated in Tango alongside chirimen. Through new collaborations with global creators, a variety of original woven fabrics are emerging for the world market.
Three hundred years after its creation, chirimen is undergoing its next wave of innovation.

Past Exhibition Information
An exhibition of products developed through this project and PR for the Tango Creation Platform was held at "Galerie éphémère" (132 rue de Turenne, Paris 75003), a gallery located in the Marais district—a historic area of Paris and a hub for fashion professionals during Fashion Week—timed to coincide with Men's Fashion Week.
Although the exhibition took place from February 16th to February 20th, 2021, during a period of intensified lockdown measures in France due to rising COVID-19 cases, the project's display garnered significant interest, particularly from French individuals with a keen eye for art and design.
Visitors to the gallery
recognized the high quality of the products and materials made from "Tango Chirimen." Through videos, photos, and brochures depicting the workshops, they experienced the unique techniques and the allure of the Tango region, the fabric's origin. Additionally, business meetings and consultations were conducted online within the gallery. This provided a platform for the fabric producers who developed the products to explain the appeal of "Tango Chirimen" and the characteristics of the Tango region to visitors, fostering two-way communication to expand sales channels for the fabric and grow the fan base for "Tango Chirimen."
