Introducing "Wooden Straws" for sake, to enjoy the scent of cedar! For abundant forests that will last for the next 100 years.
Born from the global movement to eliminate plastics, these are "Wooden Straws" by Creco Lab. They are made by rolling thin sheets of wood, about 0.15mm thick, sliced from thinned domestic cedar and cypress, using a unique processing method.
This product emerged from an initiative called the "Wooden Straw Project," which aims to raise awareness about water and forest issues. By using Japanese timber, it not only revitalizes the forestry industry but also promotes proper forest management, contributing to the protection of forests and the water they hold. In essence, "Wooden Straws" are eco-friendly straws aligned with the UN's "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."
Now, a new "Wooden Straw" has been created specifically for enjoying the scent of cedar with sake. It is available for a limited time until late January 2020 at the Tsutaya Books in Umeda, Osaka.
Wooden Straws for Sake? Enjoying Nihonshu with Cedar Aroma
"Taruzake" (sake aged in wooden barrels) is a sake where the aroma of the wood blends with the aroma of the sake itself. Traditionally, sake was placed in wooden barrels to infuse the wood's scent, allowing people to enjoy the "koka" – the aroma of cedar. The scent of cedar brings a sense of comfort, and when combined with the inherent aroma of sake, it creates a refreshing fragrance.
Using a "Wooden Straw" allows you to experience the woody aroma and the mellow taste that conveys the warmth of the wood, making it recommended even for those who don't usually drink sake.
【HOW TO: Wooden Straws x Hot Sake】
[STEP 1] Place the wooden straw in a tokkuri (sake flask) and warm it with the sake.
[STEP 2] Pour the sake into a slightly taller vessel with the straw, and enjoy the sake while savoring the cedar aroma. Sipping occasionally through the straw enhances the cedar experience.
Also suitable for chilled sake, cocktails, soft drinks, birthday parties, and event items.
They can be used multiple times if washed and dried thoroughly.
