Poul Kjærholm: A Designer Pursuing Material Possibilities

Poul Kjærholm was active primarily in the 1950s, a golden age for Danish furniture design. While steel was not the mainstream material in Denmark at the time, Kjærholm distinguished himself as a designer who primarily used steel. True to his words, "I want to express the properties of the material rather than my own personality," the materials he used—steel, leather, stone—give his furniture a unique presence. Another key characteristic is the structure, which, after careful consideration, has been stripped down to its bare essentials. Kjærholm was known for his uncompromising aesthetic and unwavering commitment to perfection.
