Experience Taiwanese gardens within a Kyoto machiya. The Taiwanese design festival 'Future Hanami: Taiwan House' arrives in Kyoto.
The Taiwanese creative festival 'Future Hanami: Taiwan House' will be held from Saturday, October 23 to Sunday, November 7, 2021, at The Terminal Kyoto in Kyoto.
The event expresses the deepened friendship between Japan and Taiwan during the pandemic through the motif of 'flowers.' By hosting a feast named 'Future Hanami' in Japan, the exhibition conveys a longing for reunion and the desire to share Taiwan's free culture and diverse designs. For this Kyoto exhibition, a traditional Kyoto machiya, characteristic of Japanese gardens, was chosen. Using the technique of 'borrowed scenery,' the theme is made more tangible, expressing the fusion and collaboration of Japanese and Taiwanese cultures.
At the venue, the characteristics of Taiwanese design, which have brought about diverse changes over the past decade, are presented in three categories: 'Integration of Resources,' 'Application to Society,' and 'Power to Adapt to the Times,' showcasing ten symbolic examples of Taiwan's design industry. Furthermore, eight of Taiwan's most talked-about creators will reinterpret the imagery of Taiwanese flora using sustainable and renewable materials, demonstrating the diversity and synergy of Taiwan's design ecosystem. The venue, designed to evoke a 'Taiwanese garden,' will welcome visitors with an original scent developed by a Taiwanese tea fragrance brand for Taoyuan International Airport.
During the exhibition period, commemorative talk sessions (online) with leading guests from Japan and Taiwan will also be held. This autumn, encounter works that reflect culture in a garden filled with the scent of Taiwan.

About The Terminal Kyoto
The Terminal Kyoto is a cafe, art gallery, and event space housed in a restored machiya built in 1932. Previously, this location was home to a kimono merchant business run by the prestigious Kizaiki Kimono Store. It is presumed to have been a merchant's residence, with the front serving as the business area and the rear as living quarters.
The founder, who was also the patron, possessed a refined and abundant intellect, evident in the meticulous details of the rooms, including the tea room, the ceiling construction, and the Japanese garden at the rear. The tea room appears to have been used for entertaining esteemed clients as well as for exhibitions. Furthermore, this area, 'Iwatoyama-cho,' is one of the float districts for the Kyoto Gion Festival, with the Iwatoyama float standing directly in front.
