Stay in a Tangible Cultural Property. The historic inn "Ochiai-ro" has been sumptuously renewed | OCHIAIRO

OCHIAIRO | Ochiai-ro

A historic ryokan on the Izu Peninsula, Ochiai-ro, has been reborn into a sophisticated space with the latest architectural technology, while preserving its traditional Japanese style.

Ochiai-ro, a long-established luxury ryokan in the Amagi Yugashima Onsen village in central Izu Peninsula, boasting 145 years of history and registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property, has been renovated into a sophisticated space using modern architectural technology, while maintaining its traditional style from that era.

A lodging where you can enjoy the natural scenery, kaiseki cuisine made with local ingredients, hot springs, and a newly built sauna.

Ochiai-ro, founded in 1874, is located in the nature-rich Amagi Yugashima Onsen village in Izu, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. At the time of its founding, it operated under the name "Min'unrō," but Yamaoka Tesshū, a former shogunate retainer who stayed at the ryokan, noticed its location on the banks of the Kano River, where the Hon'ya River and Nekogoe River merge and "meet" on either side. He proposed changing the name to "Ochiai-rō," and the name has been passed down through generations ever since.
The ryokan is also known for hosting many literary figures, including Tayama Katai and Shimazaki Tōson in the Meiji era, Kawabata Yasunari in the Taisho era, and Kitahara Hakushū in the early Showa era. This Ochiai-ro has been renewed into a sophisticated space through advanced modern architectural technology, while preserving its traditional Japanese style surrounded by rich nature.
The interior is adorned with decorations showcasing the exquisite traditional craftsmanship of artisans, along with stained glass and lighting that retain a modern ambiance. It features an elegant lounge, the traditional Japanese-style "Ohiro-ma" designated as a Tangible Cultural Property, suitable for weddings and celebrations, and 16 guest rooms, each equipped with an indoor hot spring bath fed by the source. Enjoy the sulfate spring water, flowing directly from the source unique to Amagi Yugashima Onsen, in the open-air baths with views of the lush Izu mountains and the Kano River flowing before you, as well as in the cave baths enveloped in steam. Furthermore, as part of the renovation, a sauna reminiscent of a tea house, designed by Matsuo Dai, a leading figure in the sauna boom, has been added within the indoor bath "Tsuki-no-yu," where the source water flows freely amidst soft, dappled sunlight. It was also selected for "SAUNACHELIN 2019," a ranking of the best saunas nationwide, allowing guests to experience a cozy sauna situated above the cold plunge pool.
The cuisine features fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared using various seasonal cooking methods, allowing guests to savor deeply flavorful kaiseki dishes that highlight the natural taste of the ingredients. We invite you to experience a stay that will soothe both mind and body in a spacious environment surrounded by nature.
