TRAVEL | Aman's Third Property in China, 'Amandayan,' Opens
TRAVEL | Lijiang, a city in northwest Yunnan Province where ancient Chinese streetscapes remain, is now home to a new Aman.
China's third Aman, Amandayan, Opens
China's third Aman is named Amandayan, a combination of the Sanskrit word "Aman" meaning "peaceful" and "Dayan," the former name of Lijiang, established by the Mu clan in the 13th century. It is quietly situated on a hill overlooking the "Lijiang Old Town," a UNESCO World Heritage site.

An Unrivaled Location Steeped in History
Lijiang, located in northwest Yunnan Province, is praised as one of China's most beautiful towns and continues to captivate many.
Amandayan is nestled in a location that offers views of Lijiang's historic, atmospheric townscape, the surrounding countryside, and, on the distant horizon, the snow-capped peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, revered as China's most beautiful mountain.
Amandayan is based on traditional courtyard-style architecture, featuring 35 spacious suites, each with a terrace. Five to eight suites are arranged around each courtyard.
Olivier Joli, CEO of Aman, states, "Amandayan has been realized through a unique aesthetic based on the Aman philosophy. Situated in an unparalleled, magnificent location, it allows guests to fully immerse themselves in its historical charm. Culture, comfort, and warm hospitality will further enrich the stay at this sanctuary."
The Wencheng Palace in the Courtyard, Built in 1725
The guest rooms are appointed with local materials and fabrics unique to the region, including Yunnan pine harvested from a mythical paradise, striking Naxi embroidery, and intricate Dongba wood carvings of flowers and birds. The Naxi people place great importance on the harmony between humans and nature, and Dongba refers to the spiritual leaders of the Naxi.
The furniture at Amandayan is crafted from elm wood felled in Northeast China, and the stone floors create a sense of unity with the surrounding mountains. The elegant, graceful, and beautifully simple curves symbolize Chinese culture while embodying a modern style.
A notable feature of Amandayan is the Wencheng Palace, located in a traditional courtyard on the property. Built in 1725, it was used as a venue for the imperial examinations. The courtyard features a 100-year-old tree, and the roof and buildings are adorned with meticulously preserved carvings and vibrant paintings, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
Three Distinct Dining Experiences
The all-day dining restaurant, "The Lounge," offers Western and Asian cuisine made with local organic ingredients. "Man Yi Xuan," where guests can savor Yunnan and Cantonese dishes, also provides a dim sum menu for lunch and features an airy space with eight seats, including four private dining rooms.
"The Tea House" offers traditional Chinese snacks and tea while overlooking the enchanting scenery of the old town. With 88 seats, both indoors and outdoors, it serves cocktails and aperitifs from the evening.
The "Aman Spa," popular among Aman enthusiasts, includes six treatment rooms with private relaxation areas, and two larger wet treatment rooms equipped with a heated stone table, steam room, shower area, and bathtub, used for scrubs, body wraps, and various treatments.
The spa menu features a wide range of treatments utilizing the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and Aman Spa's original natural skincare products. The Tui Na massage, inspired by local traditions, incorporates yoga-style stretching and acupressure to improve flexibility and movement.
Additionally, the resort boasts a 20-meter outdoor pool kept at a comfortable temperature year-round, a Pilates and yoga studio, and a gym with state-of-the-art equipment.
Guests are invited to immerse themselves in the allure of Amandayan, exploring the timeless town of Lijiang, experiencing the diverse culture of the indigenous Naxi people, and enjoying the magnificent natural landscapes, including Tiger Leaping Gorge.
