Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the company launches its first executive-class standalone accommodation.

Bed and Craft was born in 2016 in Inami, a town renowned as one of Japan's leading centers for wood carving, as the nation's first "inn where guests can apprentice with artisans."
In Inami, Toyama Prefecture, where about 200 wood carving artisans live among a population of approximately 8,000, Bed and Craft operates as a dispersed accommodation facility by renovating traditional houses. All units are standalone, featuring a kitchen, bathroom, and washing machine, offering the charm of staying as if you were living there.
In 2024, it was the only establishment in Toyama Prefecture selected for Michelin's "Selected" guide of unique accommodations, drawing attention from both domestic and international visitors.
A notable feature is that guests can apprentice in local artisans' workshops and participate in paid workshops. They can directly experience the skills and philosophies of artisans such as wood carvers, lacquer artists, and potters.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Bed and Craft's founding. "OUKA" is designed as the company's first executive-class accommodation, featuring two private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, accommodating up to six guests. It also offers dedicated concierge services and special amenities. Located along the Daimon River, a renowned cherry blossom spot in Inami, guests can enjoy a high-quality experience amidst seasonal scenery.
For the spatial design, craft designer Masanori Oji was appointed as the "My Gallery." The My Gallery system deeply connects each property with a specific artist, incorporating their input from the design phase to create an "inn tailored to the artist." The artist's subtle sensibilities are woven throughout, further enhancing the unity between design and accommodation.
Some of the works in the guest rooms are available for purchase, with a portion of the accommodation fee returned to the artist, creating a cyclical system that fosters the creation of new works.
Masanori Oji
Mr. Oji is a designer who has collaborated with craft manufacturers in the Hokuriku region for many years. The products he has created with craft manufacturers nationwide are placed in the guest rooms, from furniture to daily necessities, allowing guests to enjoy the experience of "staying in a gallery" where the entire space functions as one. Pieces that guests admire can also be purchased at the shop gallery "Kinomi."
For those who carry on traditional crafts, having a space where their work can be "seen, communicated, and lead to future endeavors" is profoundly significant, especially from the perspective of skill succession. This model, born in Hokuriku, may eventually spread nationwide as a cyclical form supporting Japanese craftsmanship.

Q. Why is the artisan culture so deeply rooted in Inami?
A.The high concentration of artisans in Inami, Toyama, stems from the advanced techniques of temple and shrine carpenters and carvers invited from Kyoto and other regions for the reconstruction of Zuisen-ji Temple. These skills took root locally and subsequently led to the development of wood carving as an industry. Furthermore, the abundance of local timber resources and well-established distribution networks contributed to the firm establishment of artisan culture in the region.
