Marking its 10th anniversary, the company launches its first executive-class private accommodation.
Established in 2016 in Inami, a town renowned for its wood carving, "Bed and Craft" is Japan's first lodging experience where guests can apprentice under artisans.
In Inami, Toyama Prefecture, where approximately 200 wood carving artisans live among a population of about 8,000, Bed and Craft operates as a dispersed accommodation facility by renovating traditional houses. All units are fully-private, featuring a kitchen, bathroom, and washing machine, offering the charm of staying as if you were living there.
In 2024, it was the only establishment in Toyama Prefecture selected for Michelin's "Selected" guide of unique accommodations, drawing attention from both domestic and international visitors.
A notable feature is that guests can participate in apprenticeship experiences and paid workshops at the studios of local artisans. They can directly engage with the skills and philosophies of craftsmen such as wood sculptors, lacquer artists, and ceramicists.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Bed and Craft's inception. "OUKA" is designed as the first executive-class accommodation, featuring two private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, accommodating up to six guests. It also offers dedicated concierge services and special amenities. Located along the Daigawa River, a renowned cherry blossom spot in Inami, guests can enjoy a refined experience amidst the seasonal scenery.
For the spatial design, craft designer Masanori Oji was appointed as the "My Gallery." The My Gallery system involves deeply connecting each property with a specific artist, incorporating their input from the design phase to create "accommodations tailored to the artist." The artist's subtle sensibilities are woven throughout, further enhancing the unity between design and lodging.
Some of the works within the guest rooms are available for purchase, with a portion of the accommodation fees returned to the artists, fostering a cyclical creation process that continuously gives birth to new works.
Mr. Oji is a designer who has collaborated with craft manufacturers in the Hokuriku region for many years. Products he has created with craft manufacturers nationwide are placed in the rooms, from furniture to daily necessities, allowing guests to enjoy the experience of a "staying gallery" where the entire space functions as a gallery. Pieces you admire can also be purchased at the shop gallery "Kinomi."
For those who carry on the tradition of craftsmanship, having a space where their work can be "seen, communicated, and lead to future endeavors" holds significant meaning, especially from the perspective of skill succession. This model, born in Hokuriku, may eventually spread nationwide as a form of circulation that supports Japanese craftsmanship.

Q. Why is the artisan culture so deeply rooted in Inami?
A.The high concentration of artisans in Inami, Toyama, stems from the advanced skills of the temple carpenters and sculptors invited from Kyoto and elsewhere for the reconstruction of Zuisen-ji Temple, which took root locally and subsequently led to the development of wood carving as an industry. Furthermore, the abundance of local timber resources and well-established distribution networks contributed to the entrenchment of artisan culture in the region.
Q. What is the profile of designer Masanori Oji?
