Sunrise Breakfast at Amanusa

One of the reasons a stay at Amanresorts feels so comfortable is the sense of familiarity, as if guests are part of the family. Whether enjoying activities at the restaurant, beach club, or spa, you're never asked for your room number or name. While this lack of formality can be disorienting at first, it quickly becomes understandable. It's easy to say, "All our resorts have only around 30 rooms," but it's the pervasive philosophy of founder Adrian Zecha that allows for such a simple approach.

UP TO YOU!──We Have a Menu, But Anything Is Possible

Adrian Zecha expresses his vision for Amanresorts on the company's website: "I would like to express my sincere gratitude and admiration to our staff – the housekeepers, drivers, cooks, cleaners, gardeners, and guides. Many of them have been with us since the beginning. While each of their roles may seem small, every one of them holds immeasurable value in delighting our guests. These are the people who truly embody Amanresorts."

Sightseeing, Walking, Trekking, Cycling, Tennis, Golf, Massage, Dance──One of Amanresorts' charms is its wide array of activities. While other international resort hotels certainly offer activity menus, Aman's exceptional quality lies in its "UP TO YOU!" hospitality, fulfilling guests' every wish.

Requests beyond the standard activity menu are, of course, accommodated, and even events like weddings are entirely handcrafted by the staff. During my stay at Amanusa, I observed an Italian restaurant, "The Restaurant," hosting a birthday celebration for the granddaughter of an elderly gentleman. The band playing Balinese music and the vibrantly costumed female dancers performing the traditional Legong Dance were all at the gentleman's request. The Amanusa staff then led the singing of "Happy Birthday" around the birthday cake.

"At Amanusa, my wife Lindsay takes the two dachshunds, Basil and Zilla, for an evening walk, and guests are welcome to join," says General Manager Sean Fleury. "Lindsay is very knowledgeable about Balinese birds, such as egrets and kingfishers, so guests can enjoy a pleasant time during the walk." If you ask the Guest Assistant, the response is, "We have a menu, but anything is possible."

Breakfast on the Beach in the Cool Morning Air at Sunrise

A must-try activity at Amanusa, located in the Nusa Dua area of Bali, is the "Sunrise Breakfast." A short, five-minute drive from Amanusa, perched on a gentle hill, leads to the private Amanusa Beach Club. The club is staffed by experienced beach attendants who offer not only rentals of toys, flotation devices, kayaks, boogie boards, hats, and sunscreen, but also babysitting services.

The beach features pavilions and sunbeds perfect for relaxing even under the intense sun. Dining is also available in the pavilions, where you can savor early morning hours with homemade pastries, mini egg and bacon burgers, and a variety of tropical fruits as the sun rises. If you desire Indonesian cuisine, nasi goreng and mie goreng can also be prepared. Lunch is available at the beach restaurant, and the homemade ice cream is a point of pride for the staff.

Experience Religious Rituals, an Integral Part of Daily Life in Bali

The allure of a Balinese stay lies in experiencing Balinese Hinduism and nature. "Canang sari," daily offerings made from young coconut leaves, can be seen throughout Amanusa and the town. Canang sari are crafted by folding young coconut leaves, symbolizing eternity, and placing petals—symbols of tranquility and sacredness—along with rice, bananas, and sugarcane, representing gratitude. The aromatic leaves are believed to enhance prayer focus, and the offerings are accompanied by incense.

It's evident that religion is an integral part of daily life. On my second day at Amanusa, by chance, it was a full moon. Hearing that prayers are always offered on full moon days, known as "Bulan Purnama," Aman's unique hospitality extended to allowing me to participate in a special prayer ceremony. Staff brought formal attire to my room, helped me dress, and I joined the ritual for the gods in a sacred area within the grounds.

Arriving at Denpasar Airport in the morning, I checked into Amanusa with my pre-booked car, enjoyed lunch and dinner, and the next morning had breakfast while watching the sunrise on the beach. From Amanusa, packed with experiences, I moved on to Amandari in the Ubud area, famous for its rice terraces. Amandari, which sparked the Bali boom in its early days, would be my home for two nights.
