Enjoy Mount Fuji Climbing in Luxury Under Thorough Safety Management
Many people wish to challenge themselves by climbing Mount Fuji, but often give up due to lack of knowledge about equipment, scheduling concerns, or physical anxieties. Leveraging HOSHINOYA Fuji's location, just about an hour's drive from the Mt. Fuji 5th Station trailhead, the "Glamorous Mount Fuji Climbing" program was created to allow participants to enjoy the climb comfortably and with peace of mind. The climbing portion of this program is supported by "Gouriki Mt. Fuji Climbing School." Since its establishment in 2002, the school has focused on conveying the essential charm of climbing Mt. Fuji through pre-climb consultations and small group tours, supporting daytime ascents with careful consideration for participant safety.
During the pre-climb consultation, which begins a month before the ascent, participants receive advice on both physical condition management and equipment from the staff at "Gouriki Mt. Fuji Climbing School" via phone or email. For physical condition, a staff member certified as a "Health Exercise Instructor" provides guidance on exercises and fitness routines that can be done in daily life. For equipment, participants learn how to choose clothing and pack their backpacks, with staff readily available to answer questions. A rental service is also available for some equipment if purchasing is not feasible in time.
When aiming to see the sunrise from the summit, climbers typically depart from a 7th Station mountain hut around 1 AM, ascending with headlamps. However, this can be crowded and the areas near the summit are slippery and hazardous. This program, therefore, primarily involves climbing during daylight hours. On the first day of the climb, participants depart from the 5th Station around noon and arrive at the mountain hut in the evening. After resting and recovering their strength overnight, they depart from the hut after dawn the following day. They can then leisurely enjoy the sunrise, complete with a panorama comparable to the summit view, from near the hut amidst fewer crowds, before descending to receive a goshuin (temple seal) at the summit around noon. The schedule is also more relaxed than a typical climb, allowing time for visits to mountain shrines and for guides to explain the local flora and natural environment, offering a deeper understanding of Mt. Fuji's culture.
The mountain hut accommodation is "Toyokan at 10,000 Shaku Altitude," located at approximately 3,000 meters above sea level. Each room is reserved for a single group (up to 5 people). Unlike typical mountain huts, these are private rooms ensuring privacy. The rooms are furnished with mattresses made up with the same linens as HOSHINOYA Fuji, offering a comfortable stay even in the mountains. Dinner includes beef stew and wine supervised by HOSHINOYA Fuji, providing hotel-level service. Additional amenities include WiFi, a footbath service at the hut, and guided stargazing sessions, allowing for a luxurious mountain hut experience.
Accommodation at HOSHINOYA Fuji can be chosen as either a pre-climb or post-climb stay. For pre-climb stays, guests can participate in making their own energy-boosting trail snacks for the climb. Under the guidance of a glamping master, they select their preferred ingredients such as dried fruits and nuts, and coat them in chocolate or crystallize them in sugar, preparing for the next day's ascent. The itinerary is designed to allow ample time at higher altitudes to reduce physical strain, and participants can confidently embark on their climb after a final briefing and equipment check by a guide.
For post-climb stays, responding to feedback that "the descent is tougher than the ascent," guests are offered a foot treatment and herbal bath to soothe tired legs and bodies after their climb. Furthermore, starting this year, a "HOSHINOYA Fuji Style Oshi Cuisine" dinner is available for both pre- and post-climb stays. Oshi were guides who served Mt. Fuji climbers for over 400 years. The menu, inspired by local regional dishes like "Hoto" and "Seida no Tamaji," is supervised by HOSHINOYA Fuji's chefs, offering a special meal to energize climbers before their ascent or to aid recovery afterward.
This program not only allows participants to savor the sense of accomplishment and the magnificent views from the summit but also stimulates intellectual curiosity by learning about Mt. Fuji's history and cultural background. HOSHINOYA Fuji asserts that this is the true meaning of "glamorous."
