We modern people are inextricably bound to our computers and smartphones. HOSHINOYA offers "Digital Detox Stays" that leverage the unique characteristics of each region, providing an opportunity to disconnect and reconnect with oneself.
HOSHINOYA Fuji's digital detox program unfolds against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a sacred object of worship. Among those who revere Mt. Fuji, the practice of "To-hai" (pilgrimage climb), undertaken on foot while chanting "Rokkon Shojo" (purification of the six senses) to shed worldly desires and distractions, holds significant importance.
The "Digital Detox Stay to Purify the Soul" at HOSHINOYA Fuji incorporates elements of this pilgrimage, offering insights into its historical context. By combining this with the glamping resort experience amidst nature, away from daily life, the program aims to alleviate stress and worries for urban dwellers, aligning with the teachings of Rokkon Shojo.
The program begins with a tour in Fujiyoshida City, at the base of Mt. Fuji, to learn about the mountain's spiritual significance. From the Kanadorii gate, which served as a crucial gateway for Mt. Fuji pilgrims during the Edo period, the journey leads to an "Oshi no Ie" (house of an Oshi priest) in approximately 20 minutes.
At the Oshi no Ie, a lodging that has hosted and guided pilgrims for over 400 years, participants will enjoy "Oshi Ryori" for lunch and deepen their understanding of Mt. Fuji worship through conversation with the head of the household. Following this, a visit to Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, located at the entrance of the Mt. Fuji climbing trail, allows guests to retrace the steps of past climbers.
The six roots of perception—sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and consciousness—are known in Buddhism as the six roots (rokkon). To practice the teachings of "Rokkon Shojo," which aims to purify these senses and eliminate defilement through spiritual discipline, participants will trek a section of the Yoshida trail of Mt. Fuji, from Umagaeshi to the 3rd station. This trek, accompanied by cultural insights into Mt. Fuji worship, allows guests to follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims.
After the trek, HOSHINOYA Fuji will host participants, offering a meal reminiscent of the hospitality provided by the Oshi no Ie.
The cuisine, inspired by local specialties such as "Hoto" and "Seida no Tamaji," is supervised by the chefs at HOSHINOYA Fuji. While soothing the body after the trek, the heightened senses, refined through the practice of Rokkon Shojo, will allow guests to perceive the complex flavors and aromas of the ingredients.
