INTERVIEW | A Conversation with Isabelle Giordano, President of UniFrance Films

Five Stories About "Festival du Film Français 2015"

The "Festival du Film Français 2015" has once again opened in spectacular fashion, offering an early look at the latest French films and welcoming numerous filmmakers from France. From Friday, June 26th to Monday, June 29th, a dozen films will be screened, alongside a variety of events. Ahead of the opening, OPENERS sat down with Isabelle Giordano, President of UniFrance Films, the organization behind the festival. We asked her five questions about the festival: what criteria are used to select the films, and who are the new talents to watch this year.

1. In a word, what is the charm of French cinema?

If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "unique." Like fine wine, it's impossible to define. Looking at films by country of production, perhaps no other nation's cinema is as debated, acclaimed, criticized, and paid homage to as France's.

2. What criteria are used to select films for the festival?

We primarily select films that performed well at the box office in France or have already secured distribution in Japan. At the same time, we make an effort to include films that haven't yet been picked up for distribution. Among this year's selections are "The Royal Wedding" and "Albertine in the Dark," last year's top hits. Japanese audiences possess a rich sensibility that truly appreciates auteur-driven films. We sincerely hope you will discover a variety of French film genres through this festival.

3. Who are the new talents to watch this year?

Undoubtedly, it's Anaïs Demoustier! She stars in François Ozon's "The New Girlfriend." She is currently one of the most sought-after emerging actresses in France, likely appearing in about four films this year alone. At last month's Cannes Film Festival, she also garnered attention for her role in "Marguerite et Julien," directed by Valérie Donzelli, which was in competition. Her appearance for a Q&A session is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th, so please look forward to it.

4. What are the future prospects for the festival?

We aim for it to be an event that invigorates French culture as a whole, like a tonic. From film to music, fashion, wine, and champagne. It would bring us immense joy if, each year during the festival season, the distance between Japan and French culture could shrink just a little.

5. Recommend films for specific "conditions," as if a doctor were prescribing them!

A remedy to stimulate the appetite

Festival du Film Français

Gemma Bovery
Director Anne Fontaine humorously and sensually brings to life the comic based on Flaubert's novel "Madame Bovary." This film held the number one spot at the French box office for four consecutive weeks. The aroma of freshly baked bread (a silent star of this film!) wafts from the screen. After watching, you'll undoubtedly crave some delicious bread and cheese.

A remedy to make you want to dance

Festival du Film Français

Eden
Daft Punk, this coming-of-age drama traces the journey of the "French Touch" generation, exemplified by Dimitri from Paris, while depicting the success and setbacks, love and friendship of a DJ who symbolizes the energy and ambition of that era. As you listen to the soundtrack, including "One More Time," your body will naturally begin to move to the rhythm.

A remedy for accepting differences

Festival du Film Français

The New Girlfriend
Eight of France's most celebrated actresses star together in "8 Women," and "Potiche" depicts the success story of a housewife played by Catherine Deneuve. Ozon's world, known for its glamour and uplifting spirit, returns to delight his many fans in Japan. This is a story about "women" who wish to live their one life to the fullest, on their own terms. You will learn how to overcome prejudice and accept differences.

A remedy against foolish acts

Festival du Film Français

Timbuktu (tentative title)
This film swept the César Awards (the French Academy Awards) this year and was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Set in Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mali, it is a moving story about a father and daughter who love music and their struggle against the oppression of Islamic extremists. It will inspire you with the strength and courage to confront foolish acts.

A remedy for immersing yourself in the love of women

Festival du Film Français

Clouds of Sils Maria (Original title: Sils Maria)
An exquisite drama depicting the light and shadow of a great actress living in a dazzling world. While Juliette Binoche's overwhelming presence as the lead is captivating, the alluring performances of Hollywood actresses, including Kristen Stewart, who won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress, are also noteworthy. You will be fully immersed in the visual beauty crafted by director Olivier Assayas, who is unparalleled in his ability to capture the essence of women on screen.
