What Kind of Magazine is "This"?
We are launching a magazine called "This." It's difficult to describe in a single word, but if I had to, it might be the phrase from Raymond Carver's short story "A Small, Good Thing" (translated by Haruki Murakami in Japanese). It may not be greatly helpful, but I believe it can be of some small help to beings as small as ourselves. I wondered if we could create a magazine that feels good for ourselves and our bodies, and perhaps that would be good for the Earth too. The title "This" was chosen for its familiarity, referring to things that are very close at hand (not "That") and as one of the first English words we learn. Around that time, I heard that "lace is passed down from parent to child, child to grandchild." With lace stories as a structural theme, "This" aims to explore with its readers ways of living that are mindful and cherished, living within one's means, and embracing contentment. In the inaugural issue's main feature, we introduce antique lace from Diane Reis, a leading collector, and discuss lace and culture. Other features include a visit to a lace factory, the story of a shibori dyeing technique preserved by three generations of women, the charm ofネルドリップ coffee, a profile of a one-woman-run baked goods shop, and a discussion on aphasia. We sincerely hope you will enjoy it.
