ART FAIR TOKYO 2014 | Unveiling the Core Sections and Partner Booths (1)
This year's "Art Fair Tokyo," featuring over 150 exhibitors, promises to be a celebration that fosters a deeper sense of historical connection, transcending various boundaries. The antique art area, with its meticulously crafted displays, will host 20 antique art galleries. A special project, "Artistic Practices," linking Japan's modern and contemporary eras, will also be held. In the contemporary art section, in addition to traditional gallery exhibitions, a new "G-plus" section will be introduced, focusing on curated projects. In this third installment of our feature, we introduce the highlights of the fair's core sections and partner booths.

From Hokusai Manga to Japan's Leading Contemporary Art
Hokusai Manga is said to have originated about 200 years ago when Katsushika Hokusai began teaching his disciples how to draw. Since then, Mitsuru Urakami of Urakami Shōkyōdō has been collecting these works, which have been widely read, for 40 years. These works are said to have influenced artists worldwide. This collection can be viewed at this Art Fair.
Mr. Urakami states, "Edouard Manet copied the insect drawings, and they are preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Paul Klee also copied the drawings of men exercising while wearing hats." The Andy Warhol exhibition currently being held at the Mori Art Museum features a time capsule of Warhol's favorite items, which includes a book featuring Hokusai Manga.
This year, the special project "Artistic Practices" will be held again. This project, launched in 2011 with the concept that "experimental art exists in every era and genre," focuses on "Modernity Created by Japan" this year. It explores the path from Japanese modern art to the present day and its history. In recent years, movements looking back at the flow of post-war Japanese art, such as "Gutai" and "Mono-ha," have spread globally. "No attempt has yet been made to connect these fragmented phenomena and present the continuity of history," says Yutaka Yamamoto, supervisor of this exhibition and representative of Tokyo Gallery + BTAP.
How did Japanese artists, before arriving at the contemporary art we see in Japan today, evolve and change within the cultural climate of "Modern Japan"? This special exhibition brings together works by modern Japanese painters, primarily Western-style paintings, that could only have been created by them. Through this exhibition, we hope you will feel the roots of the unique Japanese sensibility and art perspective, and the historical connections that live on today.
In the contemporary art section, pay attention to the newly established "G-plus." Seventeen galleries, mainly leading contemporary art galleries in Japan, will participate and present highly curated projects. Sagorō Aoyama's new work "About Painting" will be exhibited in an installation format by Mizuma Art Gallery, and works by Simon Fujiwara, whose participation in last year's Dazaifu Tenmangu Art Program is still fresh in our memory, will be presented by TARO NASU. Works by Tsuruko Yamazaki, a founding member of "Gutai," will be exhibited by Take Ninagawa.
At SCAI THE BATHHOUSE, works by artists selected by Kōhei Nawa's curation will be exhibited. Furthermore, collaborations between multiple galleries, such as Yamamoto Gendai + ARATANIURANO + NANZUKA, which is planning an exhibition centered around London galleries dealing in antique art, are not to be missed this time.

Don't Miss the Curated Partner Booths!
The partner booths, curated by various art-related companies, also offer a rich experience. First, there is the booth for the "17th Japan Media Arts Festival," which recently concluded. Award-winning works, including recent pieces, will be screened. During the fair, talk events are scheduled with artists such as Daito Manabe, who won the Grand Prize for Entertainment last year and is part of the production team again this year, and Takayuki Ishii (Taka Ishii Gallery), who actively introduces contemporary Japanese art overseas.
Next is the booth by the "Japan Art Photography Association," established last year with the aim of establishing and developing the market for Japanese art photography and film, and supporting and nurturing young photographers. Seven leading Japanese photo galleries will exhibit. From veteran artists such as Miyako Ishiuchi (Third Gallery Aya), Michiko Kon (Photo Gallery International), and Yutaka Takanashi (Taka Ishii Gallery Photography/Film), to emerging artists like Ayano Sudo (Picture Photo Space) and Natsumi Hayashi (MEM), known for her striking works with a sense of floating, a compelling lineup of artists is expected.
Furthermore, a booth called "Kōjutsu AFT Classic" will be presented, showcasing the exhibition "Kōjutsu" which seeks to discover the future and potential of Japanese art through the "craftsmanship" born from unique Japanese meticulousness and dexterity. Since its inception in 2010, this initiative has introduced the activities of artists who strive to elevate themselves and their work to new heights through the training and practice of "craftsmanship" as a new weapon. Under the curation of Tsutomu Ikenouchi (Röntgen Werke), works such as object art using guitars by Yoshihiko Sato, known for his works based on mass-produced products, and multi-layered print works by Hideki Kuwashima will be exhibited. Through the works of over 8 artists, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the unique Japanese expression style and its "monogatari" (story).
First-Ever Key Visual Collaboration for ART FAIR TOKYO
Finally, for the first time in Art Fair Tokyo's history, a key visual collaboration with an artist will be announced. The collaboration is between Masayoshi Furukodaira, who handles Art Fair Tokyo's visual image every year, and artist Teppei Kaneko.
The main visual designed by Mr. Furukodaira, combined with Mr. Kaneko's alphabets and paint materials, will result in newly designed banners and boards appearing at the venue. Additionally, those who answer a survey will receive an "ART FAIR TOKYO" ballpoint pen with Mr. Kaneko's alphabet design, on a first-come, first-served basis.
