Introducing Highlights of Special Sections
From Friday, March 7th to Sunday, March 9th, the 9th "Art Fair Tokyo" will be held at the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho. In recent years, the fair has actively developed special sections and projects, and this year too, a wide variety of content is planned. This second installment of our three-part feature on "Art Fair Tokyo 2014" focuses on the highlights of three special sections: "Discover Asia," "Tokyo Limited," and "OUTLINES."

Discover Asia
"Discover Asia," which introduces the cutting edge of contemporary Asian art, will feature a total of 8 galleries from countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This year, there are plans for first-time participating galleries from areas gaining attention in the art world, including the Philippines and Indonesia.
From Manila, Philippines, works by artist Poklong Anading will be exhibited by the gallery "1335Mabini." Born in 1975, Anading began his career as a painter and is known for his photography and video works. His works are collected by the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and he also participated in "Welcome to the Jungle: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia" held at the Yokohama Museum of Art last year.
From Indonesia's alternative space "ROH projects," works by Agus Suwage will be exhibited. Suwage gained international recognition for his self-portrait series throughout Indonesia and beyond. He continues to present works in the form of thought-provoking drawings, sculptures, installations, paintings, and assemblages (techniques involving the collection of junk and scrap materials).
Works by French artist Laurent Grasso will be presented by "Edouard Malingue Gallery," a first-time participant from Hong Kong. Grasso, who works with multimedia, including video, sculpture, and installations, has received the Marcel Duchamp Prize and has exhibited internationally at venues such as the Centre Pompidou and Palais de Tokyo. His work invites viewers into a unique magical mystery tour, prompting questions about what is real and to what extent.
Tokyo Limited
"Tokyo Limited" introduces works in applied arts, such as crafts, jewelry, and fashion, within an art context. Here, works selected from a "Tokyo" perspective will be exhibited and sold.
As "wearable art pieces," contemporary jewelry, an area Art Fair Tokyo has focused on in recent years, will be featured by "gallery deux poissons" and "CAJ." Additionally, "Holland Japonism," a collaborative exhibition between Japanese Mino Washi paper produced by "O-Jewel" and Dutch artists, will be presented. Rembrandt, a leading Dutch painter of the 17th century, is said to have favored Ganpi, a beautiful Japanese paper that can only be made in Japan, for his works. This exhibition embodies a historical homage by contemporary Dutch artists, bridging time. In the field of crafts, workshops from Kanazawa and Toyama will participate for the first time, following the Tajimi City Cultural Studio Gallery Voice last year.

And for the third time, a collaboration withMercedes-Benz"Japan Fashion Week Tokyo" will be realized this year, with "matohu," a brand that continues to express Japanese aesthetics through fashion from its unique perspective, appearing as a featured brand. Under the theme of "Tsukushi" (to gather many things on a single theme), accessories and small items that resonate with collections and crafts will be presented in an installation format. Expectations are also high for the booth designed by "Torafu Architects," which attempts to cross boundaries into various genres with architecture as its focus.
OUTLINES
The curated exhibition section "OUTLINES," featuring proposals from galleries and recommendations from working groups, will include six planned exhibitions. Notably, the "Art, Media and I, Tokyo" booth will feature three emerging media artists—Simulacra Bros, Yuko Mohri, and Ryota Yagi—who are active both domestically and internationally using unique devices and systems. Related talk events are also scheduled to be held during the exhibition period.
Also not to be missed is the exhibition by "Covered Tokyo," comprising four young galleries: KAYOKOYUKI, TALION GALLERY, nap gallery, and HAGIWARA PROJECTS. In addition to exhibitions by Shunsuke Imai (HAGIWARA PROJECTS), whose exhibition is currently being held at the Shiseido Gallery, Yohei Imamura (KAYOKOYUKI), and Oruta (nap gallery), a one-night party is planned at the Park Hotel Tokyo, which has been focusing on art in recent years, as a related event. We encourage you to attend this event, which offers a different experience from the fair venue.
