“Tokyo Limited” Captures New Realms of Art
ART FAIR TOKYO 2013 will be held for three days from Friday, March 22nd to Sunday, March 24th at the Tokyo International Forum. One of the special features of this exhibition, “Tokyo Limited,” focuses on genres that have not fit within the realm of fine art until now, such as fashion, crafts, jewelry, and vintage photography. We asked Takahiro Kaneshima, Executive Director of ART FAIR TOKYO, about the highlights.

“writtenafterwards”
In collaboration with our collaborative partner, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO (MBJFW), we will exhibit works and films by the fashion brand “writtenafterwards.” Designer Yoshikazu Yamagata graduated at the top of his class from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, then worked as a design assistant for John Galliano. Upon returning to Japan, he established writtenafterwards in 2007. Since then, he has continued to create original expressions at the boundary of art and fashion. He also presides over “Coconogacco,” an educational institution that explores unique fashion studies, and has gained recognition as an educator.

Furthermore, he is a rising designer who has achieved remarkable success, including generating buzz when Kyary Pamyu Pamyu wore writtenafterwards attire on the cover of the fashion and culture magazine “DAZED & CONFUSED.”
Please pay close attention to how this designer, who presents fashion like an installation with a strong artistic sensibility, will exhibit at ART FAIR TOKYO.
“Vintage Photography”
A special booth will be set up in the Tokyo Limited section, exhibiting a collection of vintage photography with the cooperation of multiple galleries. Participating galleries include MEM, which introduces contemporary artists primarily from the Kansai region; Zeit-Foto Salon, a pioneering independent gallery specializing in photography; and Taka Ishii Gallery, which actively promotes Japanese photographers internationally. A total of eight galleries will be participating.

The special booth will feature works by Nobuyoshi Araki shot in 1965, as well as vintage photographs from the 1970s and 80s by renowned artists including Daido Moriyama. Additionally, a wide range of photographic works spanning approximately 100 years, from the 1880s to the 1970s, will be gathered in one place, promising a highly engaging exhibition for photography enthusiasts.
“Contemporary Jewelry”
The contemporary jewelry section, launched last year, received high acclaim as the first attempt to present jewelry within the realm of fine art. This year, in addition to two domestic galleries specializing in contemporary jewelry, “deux poissons” and “CAJ,” a joint booth with “O-Jewel” will introduce contemporary jewelry from Israel and Taiwan, which are not typically seen in Japan.
The exhibition of Israeli jewelry is a special project realized through direct visits and extensive dialogue with curators. The introduction of contemporary jewelry by Taiwanese artists was prompted by an exhibition of works by 13 jewelry artists from Taiwan held at a pre-event of ART FAIR TOKYO in Kanda last October.
The exhibition will consist of works from galleries that focus on jewelry as a medium of expression, rather than as mere gemstones, and pieces by international artists. We hope you will enjoy the world of contemporary jewelry, which has evolved further since last year.
In recent years, artistic experiments and historical heritages from various genres have come to be presented within the context of art. At Tokyo Limited, we aim to expand the boundaries of art by focusing on these new values, expressions, and experimental activities, exploring new possibilities for art beyond existing frameworks.
