The counter-cultural spirit of art galleries. Goyo Gallery expands and renews.
Goyo Gallery
Goyo Gallery, a contemporary art gallery based in TERRADA ART COMPLEX II in Tennozu, Tokyo, has expanded its operations by adding a new space on the third floor of the same building on April 11, 2026 (Saturday), launching a two-space system. An Audacious Expansion in a Shrinking Industry
Goyo Gallery, under the direction of Kenjiro Kimura, is a gallery with a unique perspective, introducing contemporary artists whose work Kimura feels compelled to "collect." The gallery focuses on solo exhibitions, engaging sincerely with the artists' creative identities, and has garnered attention not only from contemporary art enthusiasts but also from fashion industry insiders with a keen sense of style.
Guided by the belief that "a gallery is not merely a space for exhibiting art, but a stage for artists to challenge themselves with new creations," the gallery aims to provide an environment where artists can fully express their individuality without being confined.
In 2025, the gallery relocated to "TERRADA ART COMPLEX II" in Tennozu, Tokyo, securing a larger venue, undergoing a significant upgradeas we reported previously.
Since April 2025, Mitsuaki Nakano, who was active in domestic and international fashion scenes for approximately 30 years as a renowned PR for Barneys New York, has joined as a producer. Since then, a community spanning art, fashion, and culture has been formed, functioning as a cultural platform where artists, collectors, and creators freely intersect.
Now, one year after the gallery's relocation, this expansion—amidst a trend of gallery downsizing and relocation due to the proliferation of online exhibitions and market rationalization—represents a bold, counter-current decision.
The core principle consistently upheld is "the value of experiencing art in a real, physical encounter." In an era of accelerating digitalization, the belief that the experience of engaging with excellent works in a quality space is becoming increasingly important lies at the heart of this decision.
Goyo Gallery was born from Kenjiro Kimura's personal art collection. The works, gathered over many years with his unique aesthetic sensibility, continue to expand, transcending generations and genres. The exhibition "The Collection," celebrating this renewal, showcases carefully selected pieces from his collection, presenting the perspective the gallery has cultivated.
The newly established Space II is planned to host cross-disciplinary exhibitions by the same artist, as well as solo exhibitions by different artists. By utilizing the two spaces, the curation is expected to foster interactions between works and create new contexts. With the opening of the new space, the gallery plans to refresh its exhibitions monthly, creating a venue that allows for more in-depth engagement with a greater number of artists.
Art and counter-culture have always been closely intertwined. Now, it's not just art, but the galleries housing it, that are beginning to rebel against the times. In an industry where galleries are shrinking due to digitalization, Goyo Gallery's decision to expand is, in itself, an act of counter-cultural spirit. History has shown that those who defy the era often shape the next wave of culture.
