A Captivating Balance of Volatile Acidity and Fruitiness

The wine "NANYO POP 2018" has been released, a collaborative creation by Grape Republic, a winery based in Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, Josh Raffel, representative of New Zealand brewery Garage Project, and New Zealand winery DON & KINDELI.
Garage Project, founded in New Zealand in 2011, has achieved rapid growth and garnered international acclaim. Beyond standard beers like IPAs, stouts, and pilsners, they produce a diverse range of brews, including lagers, dark ales, and red ambers, often incorporating unique ingredients.
The wine born from this three-way collaboration is "NANYO POP." By selecting relatively new grape varietals and employing traditional winemaking techniques with fermentation in amphora, a uniquely stimulating wine has been created.
The grapes used are from Nanyo City and Takahata Town in Yamagata Prefecture. Half of the grapes underwent whole-bunch fermentation, while the other half were destemmed. Of this portion, approximately 70 percent was fermented in old barrels and 30 percent in stainless steel tanks.
Following 18 days of skin contact, the grapes were gently pressed. The result is a stimulating wine with a well-balanced interplay of volatile acidity and fruitiness.
Regarding this collaboration, Josh Raffel commented, "I first learned about Grape Republic when Kazu (Kazumi Fujimaki, representative of Grape Republic) and Haru (Haruyuki Yano of Grape Republic) helped with the grape crushing during harvest at Kindeli and Garage Project in New Zealand. Then, when I visited Japan for a trip and reunited with the two at Grape Republic, my excitement and what I learned there sparked this collaboration. I also believe this collaboration is an excellent way to raise awareness of various wine-producing regions."
