Augier Was Youngest Recipient Among This Year's Honorees
"Tour d'Argent Tokyo" is the sole international branch of Tour d'Argent, a grand maison boasting nearly 400 years of history in Paris. Its Executive Chef, Renaud Augier, has achieved the M.O.F., widely recognized as the pinnacle of French gastronomy and considered equivalent to Japan's Living National Treasure.
The M.O.F. is a national French title awarded to artisans possessing exceptional skills, deemed worthy of being the foremost inheritors of French culture. It encompasses over 200 professions, including gastronomy, architecture, jewelry, and beauty. This prestigious selection process, held only once every four years since its inception in 1924, is steeped in history and authority.
The evaluation assesses all the qualities required of a top chef: efficiency under extremely tight deadlines, knowledge of the latest techniques, mastery of traditional methods, the ability to respond instantly to challenges, creativity, and aesthetic sensibility. Known for its formidable difficulty, the culinary category saw 753 applicants advance to the first round of the written examination, with only seven ultimately receiving the honor, including Augier, who became the youngest recipient.
Born in 1981, Augier honed his skills at renowned French restaurants before joining the Tour d'Argent in Paris. He became Executive Chef at "Tour d'Argent Tokyo" in 2013. Although he was a finalist in the 2015 M.O.F. selection, he narrowly missed the award. This year, on his second attempt, he has achieved this coveted honor.
"Being selected as an M.O.F. is an unforgettable joy and a source of immense pride," Augier commented. "This is not an endpoint, but rather the beginning of a new journey and fresh challenges. I am deeply committed to perfecting the delivery of the French 'art de vivre'—the spirit of aesthetic appreciation in life—to our guests in Japan, and I aspire to pass on my knowledge to the younger generation of chefs who will shape the future of French cuisine."
