A Spectrum of Flavors Reflecting Modern Sensibilities
The team behind Salty Road is Marisa, who adores making taffy, and her assistant, Caroline. Marisa, who previously worked as a candy maker, founded the brand in 2011 with the desire to "create truly high-quality saltwater taffy with my own hands!"
Marisa learned the traditional, labor-intensive handmade method of kneading and stretching from scratch. She then devised a recipe that incorporated genuine salt flakes, setting her taffy apart from the standard "saltwater taffy."
Through extensive research, focusing on natural, high-quality ingredients and a commitment to avoiding artificial flavors and colors, they succeeded in creating a unique, rich flavor profile using ingredients like roasted vanilla bean powder and fruit purees. The taffy, with its perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness, and its rich, milkshake-like taste, quickly became a sensation. It's now a highly sought-after item, featured not only in Brooklyn but also in gourmet shops, gift stores, and select boutiques across the country.
Initially, all production was done by hand, but demand soon outstripped their capacity. They ultimately launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to fund the purchase of a dough-kneading machine and a wrapping machine. The project was a resounding success, and while production remains small-scale, they now operate a small factory in Brooklyn.
Salty Road's taffy is popular not only for its meticulous production process but also for its wide array of diverse flavors. Among their offerings are "Sea Salt Caramel," surprisingly rich for its simple recipe; "Vanilla," a decadent and creamy classic; "Salted Mango Lassi," which captures the essence of the drink in taffy form; and the seasonal "Salty Caramel Apple," featuring a hint of apple cider jelly. Their taffy, infused with the modern sensibilities of these two young women, is certainly worth paying attention to.
