Banitsa: Bulgaria's National Dish, a Taste of Home
Traditional breakfasts from around the world are disappearing. World Breakfast All Day changes its menu every two months, aiming to introduce people to different cultures through their morning meals, which are rich in history, culture, and nutrition. For March and April, the chosen theme is Bulgaria.
Yogurt, a national staple, is called "kiselo mlyako" and is not only eaten on its own but also used in various cooked dishes, unlike in Japan, finding its way into salads and soups. Bulgaria is also home to the "Rose Valley," the world's largest rose-producing region, located in the Balkan Mountains in the country's center. It's a country brimming with elements that cleanse both body and soul.
Featured at World Breakfast All Day is "Banitsa," the national dish and a taste of home: a phyllo pastry baked in a spiral, filled with eggs and cheese. This is served with "Ayran," a savory yogurt drink, recreating a typical Bulgarian breakfast. Accompanying the dish are "Shopska Salad" made with plenty of Sirene cheese, "Snezhanka," a traditional yogurt-based dish, and "Sarm" (stuffed peppers or cabbage leaves) served with a boiled egg and roasted eggplant.
Additionally, a warm yogurt soup, a traditional Bulgarian porridge made with spinach and rice, is available. For dessert, "Baklava," thin phyllo pastry soaked in syrup, and a traditional Bulgarian herbal tea, "MurГal'ski," promise a delightful end to the meal.
Throughout the event, cooking classes and workshops related to Bulgaria will also be held. Come and savor a refreshing Bulgarian breakfast that evokes the feeling of spring.
