Capturing the Heart of Japan with Unfettered Framing

For half a century, Daido Moriyama has framed landscapes with his sharp gaze and signature monochrome aesthetic. His work has garnered significant acclaim not only in Japan but also internationally, in countries such as the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, and France. He is recognized as a preeminent Japanese photographer, with a current solo exhibition at the Tate Modern in London.

This collection presents contemporary Tokyo as captured by Moriyama in monochrome photographs from 2008 to 2012. The images, shot with a directness and freedom of framing far removed from any sense of artistic maturity, crystallize the essence of Japan, photographed over four years, into Moriyama's distinctive interplay of black and white, light and shadow.

His previous work, "Color," published in April of this year, featured Tokyo landscapes from the same period captured with a compact digital camera. "Monochrome" can be seen as a continuation of that series. The collection stands as a testament to Moriyama's signature style, exuding an overwhelming presence.
