The "MORIOKASHOTEN Ginza Store" opened on May 5, 2015, on the first floor of the Suzuki Building in Ginza 1-chome, a building completed in 1929 and designated as a Tokyo-selected historical building. Owner Yoshiyuki Morioka shares his thoughts leading up to the opening of the Ginza store.

A bookstore that sells one book at a time—This year marks my 10th anniversary since opening my own bookstore. During this time, I have repeatedly held exhibition events for book launches, and on many occasions, I have witnessed the creation of a happy dialogue between authors and readers.
This "happy dialogue" also leads to increased sales for bookstores and publishers. Gradually, I came to want to run a bookstore that could host such events on a continuous basis. And now, I have decided to start a "bookstore that sells one book at a time."
This is a bookstore that operates with a focus on a single type of book for a set period. It can also be described as a bookstore that holds exhibitions derived from one book. On January 15th, to make this bookstore a reality, I established "MORIOKASHOTEN Co., Ltd." with Masamichi Toyama of Smiles.
The store name will be "MORIOKASHOTEN Ginza Store."
The Inevitability of the Ginza Suzuki Building
The "bookstore that sells one book at a time" is located in the Suzuki Building in Ginza 1-chome, Chuo-ku. The Suzuki Building is a modern architectural masterpiece completed in 1929 and is designated as a Tokyo-selected historical building. It is known for housing "Nippon Kobo," founded by Yoanosuke Natori, during the wartime period.
"Nippon Kobo" produced magazines of high caliber, including "NIPPON," which conveyed Japanese culture and modernization to the world. Photographers such as Ken Domon and Shihachi Fujimoto participated, along with designers like Fumio Yamana, Takasi Kono, Yusaku Kamekura, and Goro Kumada (later Chika'o Kumada).
I felt that holding an exhibition for a book launch in this location would be significant from the perspectives of both photographic history and design history. The cover of the first issue of "NIPPON" featured the "Dojunkai Edogawa Apartments," reconstruction housing built after the Great Kanto Earthquake.
