Must-See Art Exhibitions in 2025: Three Unique Artists Offering Fresh Perspectives

Keith Haring's Universal Message

Next, the Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Modern Art presents "Keith Haring Exhibition: Art into the Streets" (until April 6).
Haring, active in 1980s New York, championed the belief that "art is for everyone," developing his artistic practice in subway stations and on the streets. Alongside figures like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, he led the cultural scene, and his distinctive style of simple lines garnered fervent admiration worldwide, including in Japan.
This exhibition features approximately 150 works, including drawings making their Japanese debut. Alongside large-scale pieces such as the 6-meter wide stage set for "Sweet Saturday Night," the display includes posters with strong messages reflecting the social climate of America and the world at the time. It offers an opportunity to re-examine the universal message left by the artist, who passed away at 31 from AIDS complications, from a contemporary perspective.
