New Paintings and Sculptures Exploring Sexuality

Hajime Sorayama is an artist whose pursuit of the beauty between the human body and machinery has made him a legendary figure both in Japan and internationally. While he built his career as a pin-up illustrator with astonishingly realistic technique, his most renowned work, the “Sexy Robot” series (1978–), significantly influenced the subsequent image of robots by incorporating the beauty of the female form into robotic depictions. He has continued to challenge taboos and societal constraints, exploring various forms of expression, including fetishistic nude female figures.
The “Sex Matter” exhibition at NANZUKA will feature new human-scale sculptures and ten new paintings. Works depicting robots with sexuality as a motif invite contemplation on future issues concerning body modification, the post-human body, and AI.
Meanwhile, the solo exhibition “Trex” at NANZUKA 2G in Shibuya PARCO will present five new cast sculptures, first shown in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2019, alongside new paintings of robot dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Raptors.
