Tsuguharu Foujita and His Cats

And from March 6, the Karuizawa Ando Museum will host "Tsuguharu Foujita: Landscapes with Cats – Animals by His Side." Opened in 2022, this is the world's first museum exclusively dedicated to the works of Foujita Tsuguharu, who was active from the École de Paris in the early 20th century through the 1960s. This exhibition focuses on the artist's iconic motif: cats.

Prompted by a stray cat he found in Paris, Foujita began incorporating cats into his portraits of nudes and self-portraits. He eventually created works with cats as the main subject, such as the 1929 print collection "Ten Cats" and the 1930 picture book "A Book of Cats."

The exhibition showcases the charm of cats in various poses and expressions, featuring popular works like "Cat's Classroom" (1949, Oil on Canvas) and all ten prints from the "Ten Cats" series. It also includes the first public display of "Nude Under a Canopy" (1954, Oil on Canvas). Furthermore, it ambitiously explores the richness of animal depictions in Foujita's art through pieces such as "Dream" (1957, Lithograph), "Young Woman Holding a Cat" (1956, Oil on Canvas), and "Pekingese" (1925, Watercolor) from his peak popularity.
Each of these exhibitions can be seen as an attempt to reinterpret the artists' signature motifs and techniques within contemporary contexts and through new perspectives. Why not immerse yourself in the sources of their creativity at each venue?
