Relive the Origins of Filmmaking in Japanese Sets

Michel Gondry, a filmmaker who has created numerous original visual works, from music videos for contemporary artists to feature films. The "Michel Gondry: Around the World" exhibition currently at MOT delves into the multifaceted charm of Gondry, who is both a globally active visual artist and an amateur film enthusiast, through two sections: "Home Movie Factory" and "Around the World in 19 Videos."

The first part features "Home Movie Factory," a workshop-style interactive exhibit where visitors can actually try their hand at creating original films set in back alleys, cafes, and trains. This exhibit, which has toured globally since its debut at New York's Deitch Projects in 2008, visiting Moscow, São Paulo, and Paris, marks its first appearance in Asia. Gondry's unique world, known for its quirky expressions like synchronized window views and bold use of stage machinery as a play-within-a-play, is recreated here using familiar Japanese settings.

The second part, "Around the World in 19 Videos," showcases a collection of masterpiece music videos filled with unique ideas in an installation format. From the legendary Daft Punk's "Around the World" to the poetic Björk's "Hyperballad," "Bachelorette," and "Human Behaviour," and the latest Metronomy track "Love Letters," visitors can enjoy 19 classic works, both old and new.

Also on display are romantic and whimsical art sets, props, and costumes actually used in films such as "Mood Indigo" and "The Science of Sleep," along with drawings for his latest film "Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?"
