ART | The Master Who Made Deneuve a Star: The Jacques Demy Exhibition

Jacques Demy: The Enchantment of Film and Music

An exhibition dedicated to Jacques Demy, the French director who brought the joy of musicals to French cinema with films like "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964) and "The Young Girls of Rochefort" (1967), and who remains highly popular in Japan, is being held at the National Film Center, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, until Sunday, December 14.

Text by WATANABE Reiko (OPENERS)

Special Screening of "The Tale of the Rose" and Talk Events Also Planned

The exhibition "Jacques Demy: The Enchantment of Film and Music," the first Asian tour of an exhibition held last year at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris to great success, is currently on display at the National Film Center, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

Born in France in 1931, Jacques Demy made his feature film debut with "Lola" (1961), starring Anouk Aimée, after working as an assistant director on documentaries, based in the port city of Nantes. Until his untimely death at the age of 59 in 1990, he created works that shine brilliantly in the history of musical films, including "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" starring Catherine Deneuve, and "The Young Girls of Rochefort" starring Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac, in collaboration with composer Michel Legrand and others.

In his personal life, he married filmmaker Agnès Varda in 1962. His life has been depicted in Varda's films such as "Jacquot de Nantes" (1991) and "The Beaches of Agnès" (2008), and Demy's reputation has been growing both in and outside of France in recent years.

On Saturday, October 25, there will be a talk event by Takashi Hamada, and on Saturday, November 29, an exhibition commentary by Hidenori Okada, Chief Researcher at the Film Center.
