Architect Yasutaka Yoshimura on His Approach to Architecture


The "Architecture Lecture Series 217" is a talk session held seven times a year (once every two months, starting at 7 PM) by architects Ryoichi Ashizawa and Takamasa Hiranuma, who are based in Osaka. They invite guest architects to participate. The first guest of this year isarchitect Yasutaka Yoshimura, who will be invited to Ariafine, Nagahoribashi, Osaka, on Friday, April 11th.

Each session features architects Ashizawa and Hiranuma, both of the same age, along with a distinguished guest architect, exploring the possibilities and philosophies of architecture.

This year's first guest is architect Yasutaka Yoshimura. After working at the renowned Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, known for designing fashion buildings like "GYRE" in Omotesando, he established Yasutaka Yoshimura Architects. His representative works include Bayside Marina Hotel Yokohama, Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Old Main Building Annex, Nowhere but Sajima, and House of Windows. He has also served as a specially appointed professor at Meiji University since 2013. Furthermore, his book "Chō Gōhō Kenchiku Zukan" (Super Legal Architecture Encyclopedia), which analyzes unusual building shapes in the city in relation to the Building Standards Act, has become a long-selling hit, an unusual success for a book on architecture.

Mr. Yoshimura, a popular architect, is frequently featured in many magazines recently. Participation is by advance reservation only, with a limit of 100 attendees.

Yasutaka Yoshimura
Born in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture in 1972. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University in 1995. Completed the Master's program at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Waseda University in 1997. Worked at MVRDV from 1999 to 2001. Served as a part-time lecturer at Waseda University, the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2002. Established Yasutaka Yoshimura Architects in 2005. Appointed specially appointed professor at Meiji University in 2013. Awards include the New Office Promotion Award at the 25th Nikkei New Office Awards, the Grand Prize at the JCD Design Award 2011, the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for Excellence in Design, the Good Design Special Award, the Award of Excellence at the FY2010 Nikkei Renovation Award, the Gold Prize at the Tokyo Architectural Awards for Residential Architecture, the Gold Prize at the Asia Design Award 2009, and the 22nd Yoshioka Prize. His publications include "Behavior and Protocol" (LIXIL Publishing), "EX-CONTAINER" (Graphic-sha), and "Chō Gōhō Kenchiku Zukan" (Shokokusha).
