The Trajectory of Daido Moriyama, Continuously Questioning 'What is Photography?'

Born in Osaka in 1938, Daido Moriyama worked for a commercial design company while in high school before becoming a graphic designer. In 1960, at the age of 22, he was inspired by photographer Takeji Iwamiya to dive into the world of photography. After assisting Eikoh Hosoe, he became independent in 1964. Since then, his sharp gaze and signature monochrome works have captivated audiences. He is known for his energetic global activities, including the exhibition 'William Klein + Daido Moriyama' held at Tate Modern in London late last year.

This exhibition, '1965~', is being held at Gallery 916, a vast 600-square-meter space that opened last year, curated by photographer Yoshihiko Ueda and Shigeo Goto, who heads G/P Gallery. It features 82 works selected by Ueda from Moriyama's extensive oeuvre.

The venue displays fragments of everyday life, arbitrarily cut out, distinguishing the chaotic flood of colors in this world. From the city of immense desires, Daido Moriyama instantly finds his own desires within this erotic world and radically questions 'What is photography?'. The exhibition is structured to clearly show his trajectory.
