Daido Moriyama Photo Exhibition: 'white and vinegar'
Photographer Daido Moriyama, globally acclaimed for his signature style of "blur" and "blurriness," has released the photo book 'white and vinegar' through 'MMM,' a label he himself participates in. To commemorate this, the photo exhibition 'white and vinegar' will be held at IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT SPACE in Meguro, Tokyo, from Friday, December 14th, to Sunday, January 27th, 2013.

The "Present" Revealed Through Primitive Photography
"If all photographic materials—printing paper, film, developing solutions—were to vanish from the world, one could simply buy copious amounts of eggs and vinegar at the supermarket, mix egg white (white) with vinegar, spread it on any available paper, place any object upon it, and expose it to sunlight to create a rayograph (sun print)."
This is the origin of the title 'white and vinegar' for this series, stemming from Moriyama's own thoughts.
The shooting primarily took place in Moriyama's own room. Images captured on instant film, which had begun to turn sepia, were cropped by a designer to the size of 35mm film, transforming into two-color separated images in salmon orange and black.
The fixing of film is unpredictable. It takes time for images to appear, and they fluctuate irregularly depending on the environment during the fixing process. By going against the modern pursuit of image clarity, this work brings to the surface the "present"—the intersection of a future rapidly swept away by time and a past flickering in memory.
The Label 'MMM' Speaks About 'white and vinegar'
The photo book 'white and vinegar' was released by 'MMM,' a label formed by art director Gaku Machiguchi, curator Hisako Otou, and Daido Moriyama. On the final day of the exhibition, a workshop will be held by the label's members. This will be a valuable opportunity to hear about the process of creating the photo book and the behind-the-scenes story of these works from their inception to their public release.
This exhibition will feature 42 original photographs from the photo book, along with additional unreleased works. We invite you to witness the essence of the world Daido Moriyama has shown us with your own eyes.
