Exhibition Now Underway in Israel!

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Y’s brand and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Israel. To commemorate, an exhibition by designer Yohji Yamamoto is being held in Israel for the first time. It runs until Saturday, October 20th, at the Design Museum Holon, known for its distinctive architectural structure designed by renowned British designer Ron Arad.

“After exhibitions in London, Florence, and Paris, holding an exhibition in Israel, a country with a very high cultural level, feels like a natural progression for me. As someone who contemplates things, I wanted to see and feel for myself what kind of country Israel is, especially now when information is so curated. This exhibition allows me to experience that firsthand,” says Yohji Yamamoto.

The exhibition unfolds within the Design Museum Holon, a building that exudes an overwhelming power to instantly transport visitors into the world of design. It showcases over 80 representative womenswear and menswear silhouettes from YOHJI YAMAMOTO, exploring the dialogue between people, place, clothing, and design.

A unique installation, designed by Masao Nihei, a spatial director and lighting designer, skillfully unifies all the museum's spaces, from indoors to outdoors, including two main galleries, a lab space, and the garden.

In the lower gallery, accompanied by music, 38 mannequins move in sequence, expressing the vibrancy and exhilaration of an international city. The upper gallery offers a serene, meditative space, drawing visitors into abstract installations. At the center of the gallery, a large tree made of light serves as the source of light and energy for the entire space, illuminating ten red and black evening dresses.

“It’s important to perform without rehearsal, because it’s alive and improvisational in itself. When I dress the models, it gets closer to a real moment, and something unexpected happens naturally. I like that. The models walk the runway, they appear before the audience, and I feel their reaction backstage. That moment is priceless.”Yohji Yamamoto's fashion philosophy unfolds within this museum, resembling a monumental sculpture on the Mediterranean coast.
