The Theme is "Time"
"Milan Design Week" is a major event centered around "Milan Salone (Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano)," the world's largest design festival held every April in Milan, Italy. Its scope extends to interiors, accessories, art, and more. One of the standout works at this year's Design Week was "time is TIME," an installation by Citizen Watch and architect Tsuyoshi Tane.
At Milan Salone 2014, "LIGHT is TIME" garnered numerous international design awards, including an unprecedented double win. The installation by Citizen Watch and Tane was exhibited in Tokyo as a triumphant return, attracting over 70,000 visitors and generating significant buzz.
As a second installment, "time is TIME" was first unveiled at Milan Design Week 2016, featuring sound artist evala and technical director Yutaka Endo. This monumental work explores the theme of "time" through cutting-edge sound.
The installation utilized "watch plates," the base components of timepieces, numbering approximately 120,000. The two spaces within the venue where these plates were installed expressed different concepts. "SPACE A" represented the "flow of time" in its ceaseless movement, while "SPACE B" depicted the "various moments" existing within a single second.
The challenge and spirit of inquiry in expressing the shared modern concept of "time" through an installation are noteworthy.
