Tsuguharu Foujita, a Japanese painter active as a leading figure of the École de Paris alongside Modigliani, Soutine, and Kisling, was loved worldwide. He was the creator of the unique and beautiful "milky white skin" and a darling of Paris. His life was tossed about by World War II.
The film adaptation of his tumultuous life was helmed by master director Kōhei Oguri, whose "The Sting of Death" (1990) won both the Jury Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Oguri also wrote the screenplay and directed this co-production between Japan and France. The cast includes Joe Odagiri and Miki Nakatani as his fifth wife, Tomiyo.
The 1920s, a frenzied Paris. There was a man who was the center of attention at the glamorous parties held every night. His name was Tsuguharu Foujita. Nicknamed "Fou-Fou," meaning "jester" in French, Foujita, who painted beautiful nudes with his "milky white skin," colored the era alongside Picasso, Modigliani, and Soutine.
Amidst this, World War II broke out. Foujita, who returned to Japan before the fall of Paris, completely changed his style, painting numerous "war paintings" such as "The Atoll Bombardment" and rising to prominence in the Japanese art world. However, a cruel fate awaited Foujita after Japan's defeat.
This is not just a biography; it's a single shot merging painting and film. Foujita's lesser-known world of suffering, conflict, and struggle is masterfully depicted.
