First Feature Film Directorial Debut for Cinematographer of Godard's Work

Housed in France's Musée d'Orsay, Édouard Manet's painting 'Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets' remains highly popular nearly 150 years after its completion. A French film has arrived, centering on Berthe Morisot, the woman depicted in this masterpiece and a painter in her own right.

The film is directed by Caroline Champetier. Previously a cinematographer who collaborated with masters like Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Doillon, as well as Japanese filmmakers Nobuhiro Suwa and Naomi Kawase, she now makes her long-awaited directorial debut in feature drama.

Marine Delterme, known for 'Coco Chanel,' plays Berthe Morisot, while Malik Zidi, nominated for a César Award for his role in François Ozon's 'A Faithless Husband,' portrays Manet.

The film also depicts the vibrant and stimulating lives of artists during that era. It features numerous masterpieces, including Manet's 'The Boy with a Pipe' and the scandalous 'Olympia,' while also revealing the behind-the-scenes story of 'The Balcony.'

Manet Drawn to Morisot's Beauty and Talent, Morisot Inspired by Manet's Avant-Garde Style

Paris, 1865. Berthe Morisot, living in a wealthy family in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, dedicates herself to painting with her sister Edma, aiming for acceptance into the Salon. One day, while copying works at the Louvre Museum with Edma, Morisot encounters Manet, who is already gaining attention as a rising star of the era.

Morisot begins frequenting Manet's studio after he asks her to model for him. While Manet is captivated by her beauty and talent, Morisot is deeply impressed by his innovative artistic style. However, what awaits Morisot are her parents' expectations of her marrying, a complex relationship with Manet, and the looming shadow of war..

'Berthe Morisot, the Woman Manet Painted—Secrets Hidden in a Masterpiece,' is released in Japan in this commemorative year, the 120th anniversary of Berthe Morisot's death. Her journey to find true love and a life true to herself, after much struggle, will surely resonate deeply with us living today.
