NEW CREATOR’S FILE Vol.9
Norie Ishii | Illustrator

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

My greatest inspiration was my childhood love of reading.
As I continued to read books by my favorite authors, I began to feel a desire to be a part of creating those stories, which I believe is what led me to pursue a career as a professional.

What work made you feel like a professional?

Every time a new book is released and my illustrations are displayed in bookstores, I feel it most strongly and it's a joyous moment!
Also, when my name appears alongside my favorite authors, whom I once admired purely as a fan, I truly feel like a professional.

Please describe your artistic style.

I always draw with the concept of 'Japanese women' in mind.
This includes their beautiful skin, the suppleness of their hair, their depth, and their eroticism. Also, the 'translucence' that clients often request.
I also aim for a subtle characterization, like a stray cat – someone who seems to exist everywhere yet nowhere, ordinary yet unique.

What would you title this series of works?

“Women of Today”

What aspect of these works do you want viewers to focus on?

I'd like them to look beyond the clothes and see what's underneath.

Who is your rival (not limited to those in the same profession)?

Myself, during times of anxiety when work is scarce.
And also, my boyfriend.

What are your future aspirations?

I want to continue working on book illustrations, which I love, for the rest of my life.
I'd also like to try my hand at projects like advertisements that reach a wider audience.

A message to OPENERS readers who have seen your work?

Thank you for looking!
If you find me in a bookstore and think, 'Oh, I've seen this artist's work before,'
I'd be even happier.
